There are Mother Goose tales, such as a farmwife might have told; there is the proverbial goose that laid the golden eggs, warning about the perils of greed.
Goose in its origins is one of the oldest words of the Indo-European languages, the modern names deriving from the proto-Indo-European root, ghans, hence Sanskrit hamsa (feminine hamsii), Latin anser, Greek khén etc.
In the West, farmyard geese are descended from the Greylag, but in Asia the Swan Goose has been farmed for at least as long.

The Canada goose may have as many as 50 distinct races and variations, ranging in size from the cackling goose of Alaska (1 kg) to the Canada goose of Manitoba (10 kg); all have the same general pattern of black neck and head with a white throat patch.
The term goose is applied to many species of waterfowl in the Southern Hemisphere, but the only true geese are found in North America, Europe and Asia.
The goose is a member of a widespread group of WATERFOWL ranging in size from the giant Canada goose ( Branta canadensis maxima) to the diminutive cackling goose ( B.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hebrew Names
If the first part of these names be Ben, Bath, Bar (Aram., son), Ebed, Ish (man), a genitive relation may be understood to exist between it and the second part, thus Benadad or Barhadad stands for "son of Hadad"; Abdeel for "servant of God "; Esbaal for "man of Baal".
On the Other hand, if the first element be Ab, Ah, Amm or the like it seems that the relation to the Divine name should be regarded rather as one of predicate to subject.

 Bar-headed Goose
Sexes are similar in their plumage and the birds are easy to recognize, due to the two horizontal black stripes on their heads; one stripe runs forward to the eye and the other is lower and only runs partway forward.
It is a good bird for beginners in wildfowl, being nonaggressive and an easy keeper, highly tolerant of cold weather.

After Odo's brief hospitalization, a series of scenes builds up the fact that two factions, one headed by Sisko, and the other, represented by Major Kira are growing farther and farther apart, also illustrating that their personalities are slowly changing.
Remarkable scene: Odo finishes interviewing the General's wife Enina and she asks how Curzon is, leaving Odo to explain he's long dead and the Trill her son is seeking to extradite, is a 28 year-old female named Jadzia Dax.
Remarkable quotes: "Go over my head again, and IÂ’ll have yours on a platter." (Sisko), "There is one thing about you humanoids I canÂ’t imitate very well...

According to wildlife experts, bar-headed goose normally descend on various wetlands of the northern and north-eastern region of the country during October from the uplands of Ladakh, Tibet and high altitudes of other Central Asian countries along with other migratory birds.
The distinctive grey-coloured bird can be identified from a distance because of two prominent black bars on its predominantly white head and from its yellow-orange legs.

 Greenland White-fronted Goose, December 2003
This adult with very dense barring and rather dark upperparts was initially located on Orton Brick Pit with a group of mainly Greylag Geese, which also contained a Pink-footed Goose and the regular Barnacle and Bar-headed Geese.
This is a rather poor shot of the Pink-footed Goose also present with the same flock of Greylags.
Part of the flock containing these geese then headed off to Hampton North Lake where the White-front posed for these pictures.

 Bar-headed Geese near Chapel Hill/Carrboro
The pair I saw are members of the Asian species Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus).
Their heads are dramatically striped white and black, the body is pale gray, and the tail appears to be black.
Long story short: I found their picture in the National Geographic Guide, which helpfully shows exotic waterfowl that are kept in zoos and private collections.

Bar-headed Goose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bar-headed Goose is often kept in captivity, from which it sometimes escapes.
In flight, its call is a typical goose honking.
It has sometimes been separated from the genus Anser, which has no other member indigenous to the Indian region, nor any at all to the Ethiopian, Australian, or Neotropical regions.

 Toadsnatcher >>> Greenland White-fronted Goose
It was originally found on nearby Orton Brick Pit but moved over to Hampton Lakes (a seemingly unlikely site for this species) with the large feral goose flock (which usually includes Barnacle and Bar-headed Geese and has recently attracted a single Pink-footed Goose as well as this bird).
Greenland White-fronted Goose is very rare in Cambs with only one accepted record prior to this year.
The upperparts are quite dark with rather indistinct, dull barring on the back.

 Harteman Wildfowl - Bar-headed goose
This goose is mostly vegetarian, feeding on seeds and plant matter in the wild.
Immature geese are somewhat paler and lack the bars on the head.
The breeding season for Bar-heads begin in late May when the pair begins to search for the right nesting area.

 The geese
Goose species are gregarious during the non-breeding season and families usually remain together throughout the winter (Cramp & Simmons 1977).
The lesser white-fronted goose is the most threatened of the Palearctic goose species and globally one of the most threatened bird species (Tucker and Heath 1994).
One of the most famous examples of a conservation programme in geese is the endemic Hawaiian goose, which underwent a severe population bottleneck at the beginning of the last century due to habitat loss, introduced predators and over-hunting.

 Baffins Pond - Hybrid Goose
From its appearance it would seem to be part Bar-headed Goose, a theory which fits with the fact that a Bar-headed Goose was, in fact, present on the pond that summer.
It is always in company with the Barnacle Geese and Snow Goose and goes off with them when they fly to Titchfield Haven in the winter.
This bird has been on the pond since June 1996 when it was a product of the breeding season.

The species of goose was not reported, however it is very likely to be Bar-headed Goose _Anser indicus_, which breeds on Bird Island in Qinghai Hu (Koko Nur).
Description of affected population: migratory birds found dead, including bar-headed goose (_Anser indicus_), great black-headed gull (_Larus ichthyaetus_), brown-headed gull (_Larus brunnicephalus_), ruddy shelduck (_Tadorna ferruginea_) and great cormorant (_Phalacrocorax carbo_).
Bar-headed Geese breed in Central Asia (mainly China and Mongolia), and most of the population winters in India, with smaller numbers in Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, northern Myanmar and southwest China.

 Audubon: Birds
Considering the bar-headed goose's stamina and tolerance for thin air, one might expect this bird to take the form of a giant lung.
The yearly migration of these geese is apparently triggered by a biological alarm that rings early enough in the spring for them to miss the summer monsoon season and early enough in the fall for them to miss the worst of winter's storms.
Partly because their wings are huge, have a disproportionately large surface area for their weight, and are pointed to reduce wind resistance, "they can fly over 50 miles an hour on their own power," Fedde says.

 Goose 1999
The fifth annual meeting of the Goose Specialist Group will again be held in Europe from 8 - 12 January 2000 in Flanders (Belgium) hosted by the Belgian Institute of Nature Conservation, headed by Prof.
Generally there is a marked increase in the wintering populations of geese in Japan (after the closure of hunting in 1971) and South Korea (which also closed goose hunting in the 1970s), but the situation in China is less clear.
Moreover, immediately after the meeting 6 people from the Lesser White-fronted Goose Task Force visited China to discuss with Chinese colleagues the new finding of the world's largest concentration of Lesser White-fronted Geese at Dongting Lake, and thus could strengthen the links with our Chinese colleagues.
