Barak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barak was the son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali.
The story of the victory of the Israelites under the prophetic leadership of Deborah and the military leadership of Barak, her commander, is related in prose (chapter 4) and repeated in poetry (chapter 5, which is known as the Song of Deborah).
Barak is remembered in the New Testament as one who "through faith defeated kingdoms in conflict".

Barak, Ehud. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Barak began his military service in 1959, became a major general in 1982, and by 1991 had risen to become the youngest army chief of staff in Israeli history.
Barak began his political career (1995) as interior minister in the cabinet of Yitzhak Rabin, his military and political mentor, and was (1995–96) foreign minister under Shimon Peres.
After the breakdown of negotiations with the Palestinians and the resumption of violence (Sept., 2000), as well as the splintering of his coalition, Barak resigned (Dec., 2000) to force an early election for prime minister in an attempt to regain public support, but in Feb., 2001, he was soundly defeated by Likud candidate Ariel Sharon.

 Ehud Barak
Barak is considered as both a forceful military, being the country's most decorated soldier, as well as a talented leader between different groups and interests.
Barak was considered to be less open towards the so-called peace process with the Palestinian authorities than many other members of the Labour party, as he has been the only parliament member of the Labour party that has abstained from voting in favour of agreements intended to promote the process.
Barak was in February 2001 ousted from politics.

(DV) Kimmerling: From Barak to the Road Map
Born in 1942, Barak was drafted into the army at the age of seventeen and worked his way up through a succession of elite units, command and General Staff positions.
In the 1973 ‘Operation Springtime of Youth’ Barak, dressed as a woman, led a raid on a plo group in Beirut, implicated in the 1972 Munich Olympics murder of Israeli athletes; the attack killed the head of Fatah’s intelligence as well as his wife, who tried to shield him.
Barak is accused of having scrambled into his helicopter before any of the wounded could be evacuated and fleeing to Tel Aviv.

The New York Review of Books: Camp David: The Tragedy of Errors
Barak's team was convinced that the Israeli public would ratify an agreement with the Palestinians, even one that entailed far-reaching concessions, so long as it was final and brought quiet and normalcy to the country.
Barak's stated view that the alternative to an agreement would be a situation far grimmer than the status quo created an atmosphere of pressure that only confirmed Arafat's suspicions —and the greater the pressure, the more stubborn the belief among Palestinians that Barak was trying to dupe them.
Barak's inability to create a working relationship with Arafat was bemoaned in the administration; his entreaties to the Americans to "expose" and "unmask" Arafat to the world were largely ignored.

The New York Review of Books: Camp David and After: An Exchange (2. A Reply to Ehud Barak)
Barak draws from this the conclusion that the refugees are the "main demographic-political tool for subverting the Jewish state." The Palestinian leadership's insistence on a right of return demonstrates, in his account, that their conception of a two-state solution is one state for the Palestinians in Palestine and another in Israel.
Barak's failure to recognize this is peculiar coming from a leader who was so sensitive to the role of Israeli public opinion.
Barak also appears to have given up on what was his most important intuition—that the time for incremental or partial moves was over, and that the parties had to move toward a comprehensive and final settlement.

BBC NEWS | World | Middle East | Barak: Gung-ho dove
Mr Barak, hoping for the accolade of statesman of peace found himself caught up in the grubby world of Israeli domestic politics - eventually leading to a hefty defeat to Likud leader Ariel Sharon in the prime ministerial election.
Mr Barak's problems stemmed from his difficulty in adjusting to the process of decision-making in the world of politics, compared with that in the military.
He was born Ehud Brog (later adopting the traditional Hebrew name Barak which means "lightning") on a kibbutz in 1942, the son of east European immigrants to Palestine.

Whereas in the early spring of 2000 the Israeli position was for giving the Palestinians 60% of the disputed territories, that number rapidly grew to 80% in May, 2000 (see map) and to 90%+ before the beginning of the Camp David Talks in July (see map).
Violation: Barak has proposed transferring territory in the southwestern Negev to the Palestinians, in "return" for the portions of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) that he hopes to annex to Israel.
Barak's personal willingness to violate positions that the overwhelming majority of Israelis find sacred could cause a tremendous rift in Israeli society and could prove disaster for the security and well-being of the Jewish State.

 Letter From Israel
The younger generation – Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, born in the 1940's – was forced out of the political arena, and the older generation – Ariel Sharon (as Prime Minister) and Shimon Peres (as Foreign Minister), born in the 1920's – returned to power.
Barak never confirmed any of the concessions ascribed to him by the media: on the contrary, he always stressed that he had made no concessions whatsoever.
Barak often used 1948 as his historical frame of reference, modestly comparing himself to David Ben-Gurion and saying that "if necessary, Israel's youth will fight like it did back in 1948." By this historical comparison Barak was digging not only the actual graves of hundreds of Palestinians, but also his own political grave.

The New York Review of Books: Camp David and After: An Exchange (1. An Interview with Ehud Barak)
Barak today portrays Arafat's behavior at Camp David as a "performance" geared to exacting from the Israelis as many concessions as possible without ever seriously intending to reach a peace settlement or sign an "end to the conflict." "He did not negotiate in good faith, indeed, he did not negotiate at all.
Barak appears uncomfortable with the "revisionist" charge that his body language toward Arafat had been unfriendly and that he had, almost consistently during Camp David, avoided meeting the Palestinian leader, and that these had contributed to the summit's failure.
Barak believes that since the start of the intifada Israel has had no choice—"and it doesn't matter who is prime minister" (perhaps a jab at his former rival and colleague in the Labor Party, the dovish-sounding Shimon Peres, currently Israel's foreign minister)— but to combat terrorism with military force.

 Barak's confused legacy
Barak's claim that he presented a "generous offer" to the Palestinians that was refused plays into the worst fears of American and Israeli Jews: that the Palestinians are not interested in peace, but only in destroying the Jewish people.
Barak's offer, in fact, proposed a Palestinian state that would have been fractured by Israeli settlement blocs and bypass roads that would have made life for Palestinians extremely difficult.
Barak said that he intended to negotiate a peace settlement with the Palestinians if he won the Israeli elections in February 2001, and, with that hope, he sent his negotiators to Taba, Egypt, in January 2001, five months after the start of the intifada.

Despite Barak’s regular interjections, and without ever quite admitting it, the work offers an interpretation closer to that of Malley and Sontag—or of other critical accounts, such as Yossi Beilin’s 1999 Touching Peace, or even that of Barak’s close aide, Gilad Sheer, in his 2001 Just Beyond Reach—than to the Barak–Morris narrative.
Arafat was opposed a priori to Barak’s approach—a freeze on the third, more extensive troop withdrawal and other previous Israeli commitments, and transition to talks on the conditions for a final comprehensive settlement—and still had nothing to display to an increasingly restive Palestinian populace as fruit of the Oslo accords.
Yet—although later there was a certain slackening of Israeli demands—talk continued concerning annexation of another 12 per cent or so of the West Bank in order to create three settlement blocs, thus dividing the Palestinian state into separate cantons, with the connexions between them very problematic.
