The region of Baranya was settled by the Slavs in the 6th century, while Hungarians arrived in the 9th century.
Baranya county arose as one of the first comitatus of the Kingdom of Hungary, in the 11th century.
By the Treaty of Trianon of 1920, the Baranya region was formally divided between Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, but de facto remained under the administration of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until 1921.

The three counties constituting the region (Baranya, Somogy and Tolna) have a population of about 1 million and can be regarded as a gateway to the Mediterranean area, through the Southern Slavic territories.
This region boasts one of the most highly developed infrastructure of higher education in Hungary, training a large number of well qualified professionals for the businesses, which can also obtain local tax benefits in the course of negotiations with the local governments.
Research activities are also pursued at the Regional Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, mainly in the field of regional planning, rural and urban development, as well as the European integration process.

This flatland territory - with the exception of the alluvial soil of the river regions, the brown forest soil of the Fruska Gora (Péterváradi) Mountains, and the meadow soils and the ameliorated peats of the Bánát - is covered to a large degree with chernozem.
This region, already in existence in the previous century, includes the Bánát region and Arad county in Rumania, Békés, Csongrád, Bács-Kiskun and Baranya counties in Hungary, and Baranya and Slavonia in Croatia.
In this region, between the Danube and Drava rivers, the 1910 Hungarian population proportion of 40 % decreased to 16.5 % in 1991, primarily as a result of the large scale traditional birth control, migration to Eszék, emmigration abroad and the registration of about the tenth of local Hungarians as "Yugoslavs".

The Chief of the U.N. Transitional Administration in the Srem-Baranya Region (UNTAES) said in Belgrade on Tuesday that the expiry of the UNTAES mandate on Jan. 15 did not mean the end of international presence in the region.
He said that, although there was heightened concern among the Serb population in the region, there was no evidence of a massive exodus of Serb families.
He further said he had drawn Milutinovic's attention to the fact that the Serb community in the Srem-Baranya region was beginning to organise itself politically and was becoming a political force to be reckoned with.

The various departments of the Janus Pannonius Municipal Museum are distributed among a number of buildings in the town center.
The Archaeological Department is housed in an 18th C plait style building behind the former mosque; it documents in an impressive manner the long history of human settlement in the Baranya region.
Among the outstanding exhibits are the remains of a Early Stone Age settlement (c 60,000 bc), relics of a Late Stone Age culture found on Mount Mákar, together with Celtic and Bronze Age finds from Mount Jakab.
