High explosive compound - Patent 3956039
Baratol, a well known low detonation velocity explosive, has been used very successfully for the "slow" component of explosive lenses.
However, the past uses of Baratol have not required that the composition have a low crystalline density.
An example of such a so-called "slow-explosive" is Baratol, previously discussed, a mixture of 76 percent barium nitrate and 24 percent alpha TNT by weight.

Dose Titration: The dose of Baratol should be titrated as necessary to control blood pressure to a maximum of 200mg daily in two or three divided doses.
When Baratol is used in combination with other anti-hypertensive agents, the dose of Baratol should be titrated in the same way as when it is used alone.
There is no data available on the excretion of Baratol in human milk but the drug should not be administered during lactation unless in the judgement of the physician such administration is clinically justifiable.

He said the baratol components were poured and cast into a certain configuration and then machined to a precise shape, which would be part of the weapon.
A "very large fraction" of baratol product actually turned out to be waste material, especially in the form of shavings and cuttings from the machining process, Howe said.
He said it was likely that after the machining, the baratol would be swept up in solid form or washed into wastewater containers.

Both baratols and "hydroshot" explosive charges (the small hemispheres of explosives used to test the performance of the explosives; see the description below in the FS Area discussion) may have contained a thin sheet of DU (COE 2001).
Beginning in about 1962, the process of casting the baratols was replaced by a new process which involved pressing explosives in a plastic state into molds (TNA 2002).
Thus, the need for machining was eliminated and, to the extent that a thin sheet of DU may have been involved in the baratol at this time, the potential for DU release to the environment from this production phase was eliminated.

Baratol is a composition of barium nitrate and TNT.
The high density of barium nitrate gives baratol a density of at least 2.5.
Early implosion atomic bombs, like the Gadget exploded at Trinity in 1945, the Soviet's Joe 1 in 1949, or India in 1972, used an Composition-B [RDX-TNT mixture] as the fast explosive, with baratol used as the slow explosive.

The lenses were cast in special molds made from cellulose acetate.
Each lens consisted of two types of explosive, one fast-detonating Composition-B [60% RDX, 39% TNT, 1% wax] and the other slow-detonating Baratol.
Each lens had three pieces: two made of high velocity explosive, and one of low velocity explosive.

Report on the 28th IAEA On-Site Inspection in Iraq under UNSCR 687
It was stated that many plane wave lenses had been produced during 1990, with various diameters (up to 120 mm) and lengths and had been tested or used as plane wave generators for material shock-wave experiments.
The work on spherical lenses was explained to have started as early as 1988, and had used various kinds of explosives, including Baratol, PETN, COM-B, TNT, RDX and HMX.
Up to May 1990, this work was declared to have been only loosely coordinated with PC-3 activities, but then close cooperation between the Fourth Group, at Al Atheer, and the unit at Al Qaqaa was established in order to consolidate their joint efforts.

These lenses were tested or used as plane wave generators for shock-wave experiments.
Iraq also started working on spherical lenses as early as 1988, and experimented with various kinds of explosives, including Baratol, PETN, COM-B, TNT, RDX and HMX.
Iraq revealed to IAEA-4 that hundreds of tons of HMX had been imported, and that Iraq had gained "considerable experience in casting such material." The HMX was used to make improved explosive lenses for the Iraqi bomb.
