Born Barbara Ann Berman in Chicago, IL; educated at the University of Texas and HB Studios, New York, NY.
TV work picked up as well, and in 1975 Barrie essayed one of the roles for which she is best remembered, Hal Linden's sensible, quietly sardonic wife on the dry-witted sitcom "Barney Miller." After the first season the show moved into Barney's workspace, with Barrie making only an occasional appearance.
Barrie later reprised both roles in the sitcom spinoffs and appeared in several other series during the 80s, though none turned into hits.

Despite significant symptoms, Barrie denied her illness for so long that she developed a large tumor, endured not one but three operations, had radiation and chemotherapy, and now lives with a colostomy bag.
By using her visibility as the TV wife of Barney Miller, Barrie has opened the door on what for many is a taboo topic, making a true contribution to the literature.
During this period, in which Barrie also underwent chemotherapy and radiation, she rehearsed and appeared in a play and on several television shows (she's Brooke Shields's grandmother on Suddenly Susan), while continuing to entertain friends, attend the theater, play tennis, and spend weekends with her husband on Fire Island.
