Fingering Techniques in South Indian Violin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Barbara Benary (an accomplished player of both Western and South Indian classical violin) has traced the development of left-hand technique during the century-and-a-half since the violin's assimilation into the Carnatic tradition.
She describes a progression from the initial style which used mostly discrete fingered notes in the Western manner (the "four-finger" style), through a slide-based ("two-finger") style, to the sophisticated blend of slides, oscillations, and fingered clusters which is found in the playing of today's concert artists (Benary 1971:38).
According to Benary, the wrist is the foremost source of motion for the wide variety of oscillations, rolls, and short slides which comprise the deflection class.

Philip Glass - Music With Changing Parts
The listener will notice some unfamiliar timbres (unfamiliar, that is, for the Glass ensemble) in this recording: the late Robert Prado is heard on trumpet and the composer Barbara Benary plays violin.
While Glass would later assign the violin an important part in both Einstein on the Beach and The Photographer, it is used there in a soloistic manner quite different from the way it is blended among the winds and keyboards in Music With Changing Parts.
Besides Benary, several other players in the ensemble (notably Jon Gibson and Dickie Landry, both of whom would be associated with the group for many years) were composers and Glass remembers occasions when performances were joined by, among others, Anthony Braxton, James Tenney, Richard Teitelbaum and Frederic Rzewski.

Hansson performed on a squealy wind instrument and Maggie Creshkoff piped a tiny flute made from a tomato paste can, while Barbara Benary played "a genuine tin-can violin" and Jody Kruskal plucked Canjo, made of a large can that originally contained chicken livers.
He played Hansson's Lawn Mower Bass, which was made from a lawnmower handle and a five-gallon maple syrup bucket and fitted with a single string.
Visitors to the show added their musical touches by tapping on a tin-can drum or ringing Benary's Gamelon, a heavy gong made from the lid of a 55-gallon drum.

The Far Eastern Audio Review -- Asian Music CD Reviews: Bending the Gending
Like Harrison, New York composer Barbara Benary built her own Javanese gamelan; these instruments form the physical nucleus of Gamelan Son of Lion, the well-known repertory ensemble and performance collective Benary co-founded in 1976 with composers Daniel Goode and Philip Corner.
The title of their CD, Bending the Gending, refers to the playful, freethinking approach the group applies to composing and playing gending, or gamelan musical pieces.
In fact, if the CD has any shortcoming at all, it's that its eleven composers are too stylistically diverse for a single CD--amazing and ironic given that many listeners can't tell two traditional gamelan pieces apart.
