  Barbara Dennerlein - Projects
Performing Barbara Dennerlein's compositions in philharmonic polyphony has been a challenge for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate and culminated in an excellent concert with the organist and her trio in December of 2003 in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
Barbara Dennerlein presented not only a contrast with her Hammond organ - as an "orchestra-in-a-box" so to speak - she also joined the orchestra with her inimitable bass pedal playing, controlled the tempo and allowed the double bass section several prolonged breaks during her virtuous bass pedal solos.
Barbara Dennerlein is well aware that her regular instrument, the Hammond organ, is a descendant of a sacred and formidably powerful forerunner, the mighty church organ.

Barbara, born in Munich in 1964, discovered her instrument at age 11, whene an organ was the Christmas gift she received from her parents who where enthusiastic about jazz.
Barbara's versatile and virtuosic playing is rooted in the mainstream of jazz: blues, swing, and bebop, but representing the younger generation her music combines further modern directions in a mixture of swinging straight-ahead jazz, groovy funk, Latin pulse, soulful ballads, and all kinds of blues.
When, at a breathtaking speed her foot is tap-dancing precisely on the bass pedals or even both feet fill in a "bass solo" in a quite acrobatic way, Barbara regularly meets with astonishment and incredulity.

 Barbara Dennerlein - Verve Records
Dennerlein's peerless technique and exceptional sound collages have helped to redefine the role of the Hammond organ and place it squarely in the modern jazz scene.
Dennerlein's haunting solo recalls a scene from the film in which Dr. Mabuse vents his madness on a church organ, with clusters and dissonant "dirty notes." Guitarist Watkins delivers swift solo runs, Ray Anderson contributes fiery trombone passages, and the piece concludes with Hart's lamenting soprano sax.
For the first time in her career, Dennerlein brought vocalists into the studio to contribute background vocals to the song "In The Mud." The added texture gives this pulsating, funky number an extremely charming '60s touch.
