dOc DVD Review: Barbarians at the Gate (1993)
Barbarians at the Gate is a rare combination of history and satire, allowing us to be fascinated with the temptations and machinations of the barons of power, even as we laugh at the resulting setbacks, misfortunes and grand financial follies.
The dual-layer anamorphic transfer presents the movie with natural color and decent detail, though edge enhancement and light fl level with poor shadow detail make it look more like video than film (the interlaced master also contributes to this effect).
Barbarians at the Gate recounts the tale of the takeover battle for RJR Nabisco with style and humor.

Barbarians at the Gate is the best Wall Street book I have ever read.
The climax is as good as any thriller (I completely missed my stop on the tube, finally snapping out of a daze thinking, "hey I haven't been this excited since Jodi Foster went head to head with Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs!").
Secondly, and maybe not intentionally, Barbarians at the Gate is a piercing social/historical commentary - just by "telling it like it was" the narrative skewers the eighties, Wall street and the Reagan years so brutally it might as well be a spit roast.

If this was a theatrical release it would be more disappointing, but being that it was a TV movie, and taking into account the budget for this movie, it's passable.
Because just like the opening shot of the movie claims, this well-executed story is based on truth, as unbelievable as that may seem.
