Barbariccia, Cagnazzo, Calcabrina, Rubicante and Scarmiglione are demons mentioned in The Divine Comedy, an epic poem by the 14th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri.
Also, aside from perhaps Rubicante, the actual meanings of the demons' names have no connection to the FF4 interpretations: Calcabrina means "he who can walk on brine"; Cagnazzo means "big dog"; Barbariccia means "curly beard", Scarmiglione "snatcher" and Rubicante "he who grows red".

The audacity in Amiel's style is blithe and unintimidating; he keeps his energy up and his material light.
Amiel tells the story of how this destroyed man, who has harbored a lifetime of hatred, comes to England to annihilate his rival, but he can't make it interesting, and the picture loses its drive.
Instantly, you can see why Barbariccia might scheme for a lifetime to win her back.

As dolphins, when, by the arching of their back, they give a sign to sailors that they take heed for the safety of their vessel, so, now and then, to alleviate his pain, one of the sinners showed his back and hid in less time than it lightens.
Among evil cats the mouse had come; but Barbariccia clasped him in his arms, and said, "Stand off, while I enfork him," and to my Master turned his face.
Barbariccia, grieving with the rest of his troop, made four of them fly to the other side with all their forks, and very quickly, this side and that, they descended to their post.

Virgil told Dante not to be afraid of the demons, and went over to speak with them.
Dante was not pleased to have an escort, but Virgil again told him not to be frightened: the demons' growling faces were meant to scare the sinners.
Dante's mock-solemn discussion of Barbariccia's tremendous fart makes it clear that these demons are rather comic despite their frightening appearances.

Everything of consequence that happens stems from an incident in Italy that occurs without dialogue in the first few minutes: Danilo (Joseph Long) literally steals his lover Rosa (Anita Zagaria) away from an arranged marriage, and the angry groom Barbariccia (Vittorio Amandola) swears to take revenge.
The couple go off to London with Rosa's mother (Eileen Way) in tow, where they eventually have a lot of kids (their youngest son, played by Ian Hawkes, is the story's narrator) and open a coffee shop in Soho; eventually Barbariccia comes to London as well, and gradually sets about achieving his revenge.

Belly, lungs, liver and all / An Irish poet translates 'The Inferno' for today's readers
He takes a schoolboy's pleasure in translating characters' names from the Italian.
Thus, Malacoda, who brings Canto XXI to its bitter end by making a "trumpet" of a certain part of his anatomy, is renamed "Captain Stinkytail." Similarly, "Graffiacane" becomes "Ballscratch," "Barbariccia" is rendered as "Buckybeard" and "Puccio Sciancato," translated by the Hollanders as "Puccio Lameshanks," becomes, in Carson's rather more Scorsese-esque diction, "Puccio the Gimp."
But the grotesque in Dante is not always humorous, and Carson shows a particular flair for capturing the more graphically repulsive aspects of Dante's creation:
