Barbastro, the capital of the Oriental Somotano of the province of Huesca, is divided in two by the River Vero and is located in the geographic center of Huesca.
Barbastro was founded in the 9th century, and Consul Porcio Catón took it, before he succumbed in order to be assaulted by the legion of Sexto Pompeyo.
Barbastro was a very important city while under Arabic domination; and, on October 18, 1100, it was conquered for King Pedro I. During the short reign of Ramiro II, Barbastro served as the capital of the Aragón.

The Banu Jalaf was a family that ruled Huesca and the region called Barbitanya (Barbastro) from about 802 to 862, and only Barbitanya from about 862 to 882.
The first ruler was Jalaf Ibn Rashid (802), who reconstructed the old Roman city of Barbastur, modern Barbastro (but then a small village called Midyar).
The city castle was the centre of the Muslim domain in the region.

On 29 November 2002 the management of the local hospital in Barbastro (Huesca) reported to the local public health authorities the existence of a scabies outbreak, with at least four cases in staff (two nurses, one auxiliary nurse and one stretcher-bearer) on the internal medicine ward of the hospital.
Consequently, the outbreak of scabies in the hospital at Barbastro was initially linked to exposure to an infested patient who came from a nursing home in the same village.
The aims of the epidemiological investigations were to identify the causal factors and circumstances that caused the outbreak; to describe its development, estimating frequency and effect rates; to define and implement recommendations to control the outbreak.

Ceferino Gimenez Malla, known as "El Pele" was born a Gypsy in Fraga, Huesca, Spain, probably on 26 August 1861, and a Gypsy he remained.
At the start of the Spanish Civil war, at the end of July 1938, he was arrested for trying to defend a priest who was being dragged through the streets of Barbastro, and for keeping a rosary in his pocket.
He was shot at dawn on 8 August 1936, against the walls of Barbastro cemetery.
