Barbeau Peak is the highest peak east of the Rockies in North America.
Barbeau Peak is named after Charles Marius Barbeau, one of the founders of Canadian cultural anthropology.
Barbeau was a dominant figure for over half a century and was responsible for recording much of the early social and cultural traditions of Quebec.

Barbeau returned to Canada in 1910, and was hired the next year as anthropologist and ethnologist to the Museum Branch of the Geological Survey of Canada (which in 1927 became the National Museum).
In 1916 Barbeau set off on a recording expedition along the St Lawrence River, determined to refute the assumption that Ernest Gagnon, in his Chansons populaires du Canada (Quebec 1865), had published all the traditional French songs there were to be found.
In 1969 the highest mountain in the Canadian Arctic was christened Barbeau peak, and in 1985, Montreal was given a Marius Barbeau street in the Rivière-des-Prairies district.

Barbeau's work is radically abstract, his painting and sculptures are his personal reactions to the river.
It has been said about Barbeau that he paints light, and a glimpse at the piece 'Lumiere de Charlevoix' does seem to be luminescent.
The St. Lawrence River may seem like a peculiar site for inspiration, but Barbeau and his contemporaries chose the St. Lawrence area because of its relation to their quests for the supernatural, instead of viewing the St. Lawrence as a symbol of nostalgia for a rural past.

Barbeau Peak is on the northern end of Ellesmere Island, southwest of Alert and east of Lake Hazen, and southwest of Taconite Inlet.
It is the highest peak in Nunavut and also the highest point on the Canadian Arctic islands.
In 1962 a survey of the highest peaks on Northern Ellesmere Island was undertaken by Paul Atkinson and Hattersley-Smith.

Barbeau's first research interest was the Native peoples of Eastern Canada, especially the Huron.

The peak is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains in mainland North America.
The peak was named in the late 1850s by Lieutenant G K Warren in honor of General William S. Harney, who was commander of the military in the Black Hills area in the late 1870s.
Hence the stipulation "mainland." Also, one must consider many peaks in Mexico as lying south of the Rockies, not east of them (despite having a more easterly longitude) for this statement to be true.

The highest peak there is Helvetia Tinde (Swiss Peak) of 1929 m (6300 feet) at 83o20’N, 34o40’W. One may see it in the  REF _Ref37047910 \h Figure 7 spotted out in red, as well as another slightly lower peak of 1898 m (6200 feet).
The closest facility to Barbeau Peak is the Hazen Camp weather station (on the border of Hazen Lake -  REF _Ref37047067 \h Figure 3) which is open in summer time only.

Barbeau might be a relatively small mountain but I've never felt more isolated and tranquil then on the top of Barbeau.
It truly has one of the most stunning views of any peak I have climbed and I've climbed alot including Rainier, Denali, and Aconcagua to name a few.
Barbeau is truly an ice gem that I hope always maintains its wild uninhabited feel.
