Barbel can also mean a submarine named for the fish: USS Barbel (SS-316), USS Barbel (SS-580) or the entire Barbel class of submarines.
A barbel on a fish is a slender, whiskerlike tactile organ near the mouth.
Barbels are often erroneously referred to as 'barbs', which are found in bird feathers for flight.

The Tambors (SS 198) class were the first submarines specifically designed to accommodate the torpedo data computer (TDC).The TDC was based on surface ship gun fire-control systems and generated relative motion of the target without input from the ship’s gyro; it provided a quick fire control solution that could be refined easily by periscope observation.
Construction of this class was accelerated in 1940 due to the escalation of the war in Europe.
This class was also the first to incorporate a centralized arrangement of ship controls and combat operations, or "attack center".

Zero Bubble » Essay on Barbel Class Design
The advance in the capabilities of the nuclear submarine was so profound that something had to be done to diesel submarine design to make them attractive for the period until a sufficient number of nuclear submarines could be built to carry the perceived operational load.
Another reason there were not more of the class constructed was that it was found that the ‘fleet’ submarines could be moderenized to meet many of the needs of the fleet cheaper than building new diesel boats.
Submariners wanted a six new diesel submarine a year build rate, but the actual rate from 1947 to 1956 was only one per year.

Barbel class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Barbel class of submarines, the last diesel-electric propelled submarines built by the United States Navy, incorporated numerous, radical engineering improvements over previous classes.
In mid-2004, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) allocated NT$412.1 billion to buy eight diesel-electric submarines for the Republic of China Navy.
Most countries that build submarines for export, such as Germany, cannot deal with Taiwan without harming their relations with the People's Republic of China, so many analysts expect the United States to either sell the plans for the Barbel class or to actually build the submarines.

Norman Polmar: Back to the Future
The all-nuclear submarine force now finds that success in eliminating the diesels has left the Navy without boats that can realistically serve as aggressors, a situation that has forced the incongruous leasing of a submarine from Sweden to play that role in fleet exercises and the development of ASW tactics.
The Israeli submarines were built in Germany, the South Korean submarines were built to a German design in Germany and South Korea, and the Australian submarines were built in that country to a Swedish design.
While the latter submarines would have great value in some scenarios, in most situations postulated for the future a submarine would be required to deliver or remove a small number of people-probably less than a dozen-in a relatively shallow, restricted area.

History of the DBF Pin - SubmarineSailor.com
Diesel boats were still conducting most of the non-deterrent submarine operations including “special missions.” Nuke attack boats were “wowing” many with their performance and potential along with occasional contributions such as “a mission of great value to the government of the United States of America.” The nukes were not without their teething problems however.
Upon Barbel’s return to Yokosuka the design of the DBF pin was hand carried to a local manufacturer of nautical gewgaws where a batch were cast and brought back to the ship and sold at cost to Barbel crewmembers that began to wear them ashore.
It was reported in favorite submarine hangouts ashore that on more than one occasion nuke boat skippers banned the wearing of DBF pins by their crew members, typically “front enders” the non-nukes, implying that to do so would indicate disloyalty to the nuke submarine force.

Dutch Submarines: The Walrus (2) class submarines
It was a project to build a series of four submarines, as a replacement for the four triple-hull submarines of the Dolfijn class; a unique Dutch design dating from the fifties which for many years until 1992 determined the face of the Dutch submarine service.
Four triple-hull submarines were delivered to the RNLN in the period 1960-64, Dolfijn class.
The development to the present Walrus (2) class stems from a different source, the Albacore, the USN test-submarine for high speeds, forerunner of the nuclear attack submarines as well as their non-nuclear version of the 1960s, the Barbel.

Historic Naval Ships Visitors Guide - USS Blueback   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
USS Blueback was the last non-nuclear powered submarine built by the U.S. Navy, and the last to be decommissioned after serving her country for 31 years.
Blueback and her sister ships of the Barbel class utilized radical new concepts in post World War II submarine design, the most important being the teardrop hull and a single propeller.
The new teardrop hull design was a critical feature which increased underwater speed dramatically and enabled submarines to be almost as maneuverable underwater as airplanes of similar dimensions in the air.

There are gaps in some of the number sequences, either because the boats were canceled before commissioning, or because, while ordered and laid down during the war, they weren't commissioned until after 2 September 1945 and thus did not see actual service during World War II.
