 Barbel Fishing. The Barbel.
The barbell (Cyprinus barbus), so termed from the wattles or beard depending from the sides of the mouth, is a very game fish for the angler, frequenting deep and rapid streams, and often turbulent and broken waters, as at the tail of mill-wheels, weirs, andc.
The barbell nibbles a little at the still bait before biting, but when a good double tug is felt, the angler may strike firmly.
Owing to its great expanse of fins, and its rounded body, the barbel is a very stout fighter, and makes a most prolonged resistance; and though it is not so active as either salmon or trout, it is more troublesome, and takes longer to subdue.

Barbel class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Barbel class of submarines, the last diesel-electric propelled submarines built by the United States Navy, incorporated numerous, radical engineering improvements over previous classes.
They were the first production warships built with the teardrop-shape hull first tested on Albacore (SS-569), and the first to use an "attack center" within the hull rather than a conning tower in the sail.
Most countries that build submarines for export, such as Germany, cannot deal with Taiwan without harming their relations with the People's Republic of China, so many analysts expect the United States to either sell the plans for the Barbel class or to actually build the submarines.

Barbel Fishing My Way - Part 2. Summer Fishing
Many modern thinking barbel anglers have now completely abandoned the particle approach, and are now adopting carp style tactics, involving boilies, trout pellets, and method feeders etc. My approach to barbel fishing these days mainly involves the use of boilies, and paste baits, and I always use a good quality base mix.
I will usually have a fair idea of where I think the barbel will be 'lying up' during the day, and it is often a case of placing your bait in an area close to the barbels daytime cover, so that you can intercept them when they move into open water after dark to feed.
When you get a bite from a barbel, it is always a very positive pull on the end of the rod, and by touch ledgering you get a very quick indication, and the whole transition from hooking and playing the fish is a very simple instinctive affair, when you adopt this approach.

I came into barbel fishing after getting on for 12 years of fishing for nothing but carp, so it was something of a joy to use a simple bait like sweetcorn rather than a boilie, and mount it straight on the hook rather than on a hair rig.
