Topic: Barbelo

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Gnosticism
xxix) Sophia, daughter of Barbelos, originally dwelt in the highest, or thirteenth heaven, but she is seduced by the demon Authades by means of a ray of light, which she mistook as an emanation from the First Father.
The name barbelo, barbeloth, barthenos has not been explained with certainty.
Epiphanius (Haer., xxvi, 1) and Philastrius (Haer., xxxiii) Parthenos (Barbelos) seems identical with Noria, whoplays a great role as wife either of Noah or of Seth.

Barbelo : According to the gnostics, was the procreator of the superior angels.
Barbelo was so perfect in glory that it was rumored that she even outshone the Father in Heaven.
To depict such a God as actively participating in creation would puncture such notions, and thus the Barbelo serves in Sethian gnosticism as a method of ascribing creation to the divine, but without corrupting or 'breaching' the divine stasis in the process; she is, in essence, the abstracted genitive aspect of the divine fullness.

Here Barbelo is the first emanation of the supreme deity, the Invisible Spirit, who reflected upon himself as light and living water, whereupon his thought manifested itself as Barbelo.
But the place of Barbelo in these considerations is important, for she serves as the fundamental mediator in the Sethian soteriology, and, in Allogenes, the first stage of the visionary ascent to the Unknowable deity is the ascent through the three levels of her Aeon, which are named Autogenes, Protophanes and Kalyptos.
Of these, only Barbelo is represented as triadic, since, in addition to her male and female aspects, her son Autogenes is self-begotten from her and thus was potentially a part of her originally.

When I first saw that word, Barbelo, my own impression was that it was not derived from a Hebrew word at all, but that it was possibly coming from an Aramaic phrase, or possibly even referencing a more ancient, Akkadian word.
It was reduced to "babble," after it was destroyed by Jehovah, but its meaning prior to its destruction is from Akkadian, "Bab-elu," which means "The Gate of God." Jehovah destroyed the gate and confused the speech of mankind, and the speech continues to be confused today.

Before the two could become one, the one first had to divide in two; and thus it was that the goddess "Barbelo" was born as the Alien God saw his own reflection in "the water of life" and fell in love.
Barbelo serves as the active, energetic complement to the Alien God's passive principle of potential form; as the driving force behind creation, she represents fertility, birth and dynamic growth:
Like the Hindu Shakti, Barbelo embodies a paradox; even as the existence of all beings manifests itself through her, she never forgets that all are nothing but maya, the shadowy illusion of an ephemeral dream:

 The First Emanation
The first emanation of the Absolute, and the source of all subsequent manifestation, is a female principle, variously referred to as Thought, Providence, Fore-thought or Foreknowledge (in Greek, all these words have female gender), and "Barbelo".
Barbelo calls on the invisible Spirit (a typical anthropomorphism, confusing the Divine with the human; a Divine emanation does not have to request or pray to the higher Godhead in order to attain something) to actualise four of her attributes as separate hypostases: Foreknowledge, Indestructability, Eternal Life, and Truth.
But still they are not some-thing separate from her, but rather part of a single whole, the "five-aeon", of which she is the core.

Why the Gospel of Judas makes sense. - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine
Only Judas has guessed the master aright—and has discerned that he comes from the heavenly realm of the god "Barbelo." In the realm of Barbelo, it seems, earthly pains are unknown and the fortunate inhabitants are free from the attentions of the God of the Old Testament.
Two millennia of stupidity and cruelty and superstition dissolve in an instant when we notice that even some early believers were shrewd enough to see though the whole sham.
*Correction, April 13, 2006: This article originally and incorrectly identified a legendary realm discussed in the "Gospel of Judas" as "Barbelo," which is actually the name of a god said to inhabit it.
