Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point / Naval Air Station Barbers Point
Barbers Point--originally intended as an OLF for NAS Ford Island in Pearl Harbor--was still not complete when it was established as a naval air station on 15 April 1942 with 14 officers and 242 enlisted personnel.
The Navy's last naval air station in the Hawaiian Islands was disestablished during a 01 July 1999 ceremony, closing out 57 years of service.
Barbers Point was named for Henry Barber, master of Arthur, a 100-foot British brigantine that ran aground on the point of Oahu during a storm in 1796.

Barbers Point Naval Air Station, an important element of Hawaii's military community, will close today after 57 years of service.
William Cassidy, deputy assistant secretary for the Navy, said base closure communities like Barbers Point "are engaged in an evolution of the American economy." He said for years these communities depended on the "high-quality good-paying jobs" that the military provided, but bases had to be closed to meet changes in Navy force structure.
Used by the Navy as a mooring location for its dirigible, Akron, the site was enlarged with the purchase of more than 3,500 acres from Campbell Estate in 1940 and redesignated Ewa Marine Corps Air Station.
