The premise is that Calvin, was left his father's barbershop when he passed away about 2 years ago.
This Barbershop was established by Calvin's grandfather in 1958, and passed down, so it has a long history in the community and the family.

Barbershop was very amusing as a whole and contained many bits that worked to perfection - I just felt a couple of side stories were poorly executed and there were some easily spotted drags in certain portions of the film.
While Barbershop is no Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition, it’s still quite an impressive set and a very welcome one for a film that came out of nowhere to become a huge hit at the box office.
Barbershop was a great find and for those of us that missed it during its theatrical run — and for those that saw it and loved it — MGM has provided a marvelous DVD for us to enjoy over and over again from the comfort of our home viewing area.

Barbershops have long been sanctuaries for men to express opinions to one another on any subject.
His father started the barbershop in 1958, but he is not turning a profit because his patrons have very little spending money in an America where more than 20 percent of the population is below the poverty line.
Calvin accepts the funds on the condition that the "Barbershop" sign will never come down, but later Lester tells him that he will remodel the shop to be a gentleman's club that will retain the name "Barbershop." When Calvin's wife Jennifer (played by Jazsmin Lewis) finds out about the sale, she is indignant.

"Barbershop" with Cedric the Entertainer reviewed by Steve Sailer for UPI
The modestly budgeted ensemble comedy "Barbershop" is one of the most likeable movies of the year, a fl "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." The movie is for the African-American audience, but its appeal could be broad -- at least to nonfls who can decipher the dialogue.
During one long, possibly final, day at the barbershop, he learns just how important his small business is to the people around him, and to his responsibilities as a husband and new father.
Barbershops play a particularly important role for men in the "inner city community" precisely because, as Jamaican-born Harvard sociologist Orlando Patterson has observed, due to low rates of stable employment and marriage it's just not all that much of a community.

Sure, the barbershop element of its story was only on the periphery, but those few scenes, in which Eddie Murphy plays two and sometimes three characters, were certainly the highlight of the movie.
In it, the barbershop is portrayed as meeting ground, community centre, and social club, while the barber is part stylist, part counselor, part fashion expert, and part pimp (that last bit might just be the wishful thinking of one of the film's funnier characters).
And the film, which isn't tightly plotted to begin with (it doesn't really have to be; the 'playing the dozens' scenes in the shop were enough to make it worthwhile for me), concludes with a ridiculous deus ex machina ending.

Barbershop isn't corrupted by the romance or nostalgia that could easily go along with a film like this, but it does define the historical import of these neighbourhood 'institutions'.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a film as genuine as Barbershop around at the moment, and as genuinely funny (Cedric the Entertainer is a standout as the curmudgeonly Eddie, a dude not afraid to speak his mind inside the 'sacred' space that is the barbershop).

Call me a curmudgeon, but I found the first “Barbershop” to be an earnest, but helplessly disorganized motion picture, mixing long periods of welcome thought on the erosion of community pride with awful slapstick and 1st gear romances.
“Barbershop 2” has the benefit of hindsight, with new director Kevin Rodney Sullivan (“How Stella Got Her Groove Back”) mixing the varying temperatures of the screenplay with more skill and an genuine effort to sharpen the pace.
What the two “Barbershop” films symbolize to the urban cinematic landscape is far more important than the films themselves, but “Barbershop 2” is a definite improvement on the core idea, and that’s all I was looking for.
