Inspired by Barbette's act, which he described as "an extraordinary lesson in theatrical professionalism," Cocteau wrote a review in the July 1926 issue of the Nouvelle Revue Française, "Le Numéro Barbette," which is considered a classic essay on the nature of art.
To Cocteau, Barbette's craftsmanship, practiced on the fine edge of danger, elevated a rather dubious stunt to the level of art, analogous to the struggle of a poet.

The space that Barbette is in used to host Café Wyrd until a year or two ago, a coffeehouse that was one of the few places remaining that continued the spirit of the old Uptown.
The word Barbette also means a raised mound of earth from which artillery guns can safely fire over a parapet.
This is an interesting dish where you get to choose the filling for the crêpes from choices like smoked salmon, spinach, Gruyère and chicken; I choose the spinach and salmon and the crêpes came wonderfully textured.

Barbette is a great neighborhood spot - I wouldn't come from too far to go there, but to walk to it is perfect.
I do recommend Barbette for a drop in meal or late night dessert or wine (or dessert wine) but be in the mood to abide out of work actors practicing their craft.
Barbette is better for wine and apps before you go to dinner or to finish the night.

One of the biggest rumors has been that one of the 16" (40.3 cm) turret barbettes, a round cylinder made up of Class A armor between 11.6 and 17.3 inches (29.5 to 44.0 cm) thick, was badly cracked as a result of the grounding.
The barbette panel is 17.3 inches thick and the laminar separation went no more than 6 inches deep, thus proving it was within the outer 40% heat treated depth.
In summary, the crack in panel III-B-4 of Barbette III was caused by laminar separation during heat treatment at the foundry.

If you ate here regularly, you'd come to appreciate Barbette for the drinks, the ambience and the people watching.

Cafe Barbette does well for those in need of a French food fix, but there are still better French choices available.
I am impressed by their reasonable price on dessert, but that will probably change if they read this (note: their prices were $1-$3 higher than the menu we found on the web).
All told, I feel that Cafe Barbette does a lot well, but not everything, and not quite enough to get an excellent rating (at the prices they have to charge to make money).

By all rights there should be a new-restaurant riot going on outside Uptown's new Café Barbette, which recently opened in the space once occupied by Café Wyrd.
It's served in a rough-hewn butter crust that is a model of the form.
And in many ways Barbette is a perfect place to take kids, especially for late-afternoon tea parties or, um, cocktails: The still-sort-of-a-coffee-shop has a laudable selection of nonalcoholic drinks, including a wine-bottle-size juice-based "mimosa" ($5) which arrives with wine glasses and feels very festive.
