Barbossa wanted to snarl, to walk away, but he was rooted to the spot.
That was the choice, Barbossa, wasn't it?" He heard the trinkets in Jack's hair rustle and a memory of running his hand through that fl mane, the light of a single candle glittering off the baubles as Jack slept beside him in the narrow captain's bunk caused another long-thought-dead sensation to spike: guilt.
To Barbossa's amazement, the face he gazed upon was the face his mother had seen on his last visit home, at 18, a merchant marine with a talent for navigation, a captain who thought him a good sailor, and prospects.

Captain Jack Sparrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
About ten years prior to the start of the film, while searching for a legendary cache of Aztec gold, his crew mutinied and marooned him on an island with a pistol containing a single shot (allowing the deserted an opportunity to kill himself rather than die slowly from starvation).
While imprisoned, Sparrow meets Will Turner, the son of "Bootstrap Bill" Turner (who was the lone holdout from the mutiny, an action that cost him his life).
While atypical for a pirate, Sparrow is also known for his altruistic nature; he often puts himself in harm's way to save other people, most notably Elizabeth Swann.

 POTCIP Captain Barbossa Analysis
Barbossa, knowing now that he must discover the mystery behind this young woman, implies disinterest by stating, “Did ya now?” As the chain slips through her fingers toward the water, he interjects, “NO!” His control slips, and he gives credit to Elizabeth for her quick thinking in the face of fearsome pirates.
When Barbossa turns his head toward Elizabeth to ensure his aim is true, he hears the loud report of a pistol shot echo through the cave, at the same time feeling a jolt as the ball enters his own body.
Barbossa probably grew up in England, the son of a prosperous man who was able to provide his son with an education, such education including the art of defense with a sword.
