  West Virginia County Histories
The county was named in honor of Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the famous hunter and explorer, founder of Kentucky, Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia militia, and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Kanawha County (in 1791).
Brooke County was named in honor of Robert Brooke (1751-1799), who was educated at the University of Edinburgh, practiced law in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, served in the Virginia General Assembly in 1794 and, later that year, was elected the third Governor of Virginia (1794-1796) by the General Assembly.
The county's economy become stagnant during the Civil War, and the burning of Guyandotte, one of the county's major population centers, was a major blow to the local economy.

One of Barbour County's main problems is the lack of public water to all areas of the county, Sharp said.
The county is moving ahead in the pursuit of the five main goals outlined in the 10-year strategic development plan it produced for the EZ/EC application and at times, it makes needed adjustments.

Barbour County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on March 3, 1843 from parts of Harrison, Lewis and Randolph counties.
He was born in Orange County Virginia on May 25, 1783, studied law, was a member of the Virginia General Assembly (1812-1814), represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives (1814-1825, 1827-1830), served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-1823), and as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1836-1841).
Most of the two family's children remained in Barbour County and for several generations the Talbot family name was by far the most numerous in the county.
