Barbra was an admitted fan of Carole King's music (especially since they shared the same record label), and perhaps was a big enough one to give 3 of Carole's songs a go.
Barbra was lucky to have been able to choose her own material (it was even in her contract), and BARBRA JOAN STREISAND is one instance where, for the most part, she was right on in her choices.
This is a younger Barbra and there is no lack of variety in the song choices on the album nor the immutable talent and ease that Barbra demonstrates in all her songs.

 >> Barbra Streisand Archives | The Quadraphonic Albums
Several Streisand albums were released in Quadraphonic SQ format: Funny Girl (movie soundtrack), Stoney End, Barbra Joan Streisand, Live Concert At The Forum, The Way We Were (studio album), Butterfly, and Lazy Afternoon.
When Columbia released her album catalog on CD starting in the mid-1980’s, they utilized the standard master tapes that the original LP’s were mixed from.
To others it is fascinating to hear Barbra’s studio technique – how she alters her phrasing of song with each take; how she sings new notes and tries new “readings” of a song.

 Barbra Streisand
Streisand was a struggling actress and nightclub singer in the early 1960s, before landing her first part in a Broadway show, I Can Get It for You Wholesale, in 1962.
Streisand has had more albums go platinum than any other female singer, and with forty-seven gold albums, she's in second place on the all-time list, trailing only Elvis Presley but ahead of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Anti-fans, meanwhile, hate Streisand's music and films with a passion beyond measure, deriding her as overly melodramatic, big-nosed, and in love with herself.

That album gave Barbra her first #1 pop hit with the title track, but while it was on the whole quite good, it still seemed like an album created to capitalize on her heightened profile thanks to Barbra's appearance in the blockbuster film of the same name.
While Barbra's impeccable choice of material is often duly noted, it is often claimed that sometimes she shoots a little too high in her bid to be diverse, and BUTTERFLY's adventurous song choices is said to be proof of this.
I personally don't think anything Barbra lends her voice to is ever so awful it's not worth listening to, but this album, overall, is more of an easy listen or appropriate background music then it is a classic Streisand memory.

On her followup to the comeback album Stoney End, Barbra Streisand tried to do for (or to) Carole King what she had done the last time around with Laura Nyro, i.e., redo her material in a similar manner and essentially hijack it (while providing a big jump in songwriter royalties, of course).
This was not so easy to do in the case of "Beautiful," "Where You Lead," and "You've Got a Friend," however, since, unlike the Nyro songs, by the time Streisand got to these tunes, they were already on King's own chart-topping album, Tapestry.
Streisand was not able to make the final transition into the pop-rock realm for the simple reason that she wasn't a writer, but she had spent a career making other people's songs her own, and she was as effective doing that here as she had been on very different material in the '60s.

The great songwriters of the past, such as Jerome Kern and the Gershwins, are conspicuously absent, and standing in their place are Carole King and John Lennon, representatives of a new generation.
Despite, however, the presence of songs like the mildly R&B-flavored "Where You Lead" and the Donald Fagen-Walter Becker composition "I Mean To Shine," Streisand still has one foot, even if partially, planted on old-fashioned ground.
