Barbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barbus is a genus of fish in the Cyprinidae family.
Barbus is also known as Puntius in some other taxonomic schemes.
The name comes from the fact that most of the members of the Barbus genus have a pair of barbels on their mouths which they sometimes use to search for food at the bottom of the water.

Tank mates could include the larger African Characins such as the Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the larger American Characins such as from the Distichodus genera.
Larger Barbs like the Tinfoil Barb (Barbus schwanefeldi) could be a good choice.
Alternately, you could house one in a Cichlid Community as long as it is not a Rift Valley set-up as the higher p.H. may prove a bit too high over a long period of time.

Red Painted Tiger Barbs and Green Painted Tiger Barbs are produced from gold, albino, and red color morphs of the Tiger Barb (Barbus tetrazona) that have been injected with red and green dyes (I do not know why there don't seem to be blue, purple, or fl versions of these fish).
The particularly odd thing about these (and this is frustrating as well) is that there are perfectly good red and green varieties of these fish available through selective breeding...
