Barcelona May Days - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From 3 May to 8 May of 1937, factions on the "Republican" side of the Spanish Civil War engaged in violent street battles.
Five days of street fighting ensued, with anarchist workers and POUM supporters building barricades and exchanging fire with the Civil Guard.
The ultimate result of the battle was the further erosion of worker control of the city and the consolidation of government power over the major labor organizations in Catalonia, the CNT/FAI.

He was in (a "so-called") hospital at Monflorite for ten days at the end of March with "a poisoned hand." He describes rats that "really were as big as cats, or nearly" (in his famous Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell's character Winston Smith has a phobia of rats that Orwell himself shared to some degree).
The second half of this chapter is spent describing the conflict between the Anarchist CNT and the Socialist UGT and the resulting cancellation of the May Day demonstration and the build up to the street fighting of the Barcelona May Days.
He returns to Barcelona only to find that the POUM had been "suppressed": it had been declared illegal the very day he had left to obtain discharge papers and POUM members were being arrested without charge.

Before the May events the patrols actually did not function for fear of being completely disarmed but kept their weapons for the emergency that was to come.
The events of May 4th to May 7th were to sharply accentuate all the contradictions involved in the situation.
On May 4th under the direction of the police Chief Sala, in the early afternoon an attempt was made to seize the Telephonique which up to then had been under the control of the CNT-UGT unions jointly, with the CNT predominating.

The May Days in Barcelona   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The May Days were the direct and immediate consequence of a monstrous provocation by the PSUC.
In those circumstances, to present the events of May as a "fratricidal struggle", as a violent fight between "the two trade union centres", is a deliberate falsification, since everyone knows perfectly well that the fight arose between the revolutionary workers, including some in the UGT, and part of the police.
The working class must learn the necessary lessons from the bloody May Days, which are bound to have an enormous significance for the future development of the Spanish revolution, if its generous sacrifice is not to be in vain.

What has been called the ‘May Days of 1937’; in Barcelona are an event of this kind, independently of the fact that the event took place within one of the two opposing camps in the course of a civil war, the Spanish Civil War.
The Barcelona workers were led by the elements organised in the ‘control patrols’ – the last vestiges of the workers’ militias for maintaining order in the rear – and by the defence committees.
These days were the first stage in the unfolding of a counterrevolution, the first victims of which, a few weeks later, were to be the POUM itself and, in particular, its principal leader, the old revolutionary, Andres Nin.

Pierre Broué: The "May Days" of 1937 in Barcelona - RH
In May 1937 it was the Popular Front government of the Generalidad of Catalonia – under the pressure of the Stalinists in the PSUC – which took the counter-offensive.
Leaders of the JCI (Jeunesses Communistes Internationalistes) and the committee for defence in north Barcelona organised a column, based on officer-cadets from the military academy, to seize the central headquarters of the PSUC and of the Generalidad.
At the same time, the local committee of the POUM in Barcelona sharply criticised the executive of its party, which it accused of having ‘capitulated’ in the course of those days, in the face of the counter-revolution, under the pressure of the conciliatory leaders of the CNT.

 Barricades in Barcelona
The April struggles and the May uprising were beacons for the workers, lighting the way to the certain destruction of fascism – the road to the proletarian dictatorship.
On 15 May many of the workers’ barricades were still standing, prevented from being thrown down by those who understood what emergencies might arise, those who knew that the class issue had by no means been settled; that the near future held the possibility of bloodier class battles than the past May week had seen.
May 1937 will be remembered in history as the first time that the Stalinists were on the bourgeois side of the barricades.
