Colette Avital (Member of Knesset, Labor Party) gave the keynote address on ``The Barcelona Process: Six Years Later.'' Whereas this process, she maintained, was rooted in the vision of a New Middle East fostered by the peace process, the main problem that emerged was a clash between theory and reality.
In her view, theattempt to disconnect the process from the course of events in the Middle East has not succeeded, as witnessed by Syria and Lebanon's withdrawal from the talks in Paris upon the outbreak of the second intifada.
She concluded by suggesting that even though some have characterized the Barcelona process as detached from reality, the aspiration itself is not necessarily illogical or unrealistic.
