Barclay James Harvest was, for many years, one of the most hard-luck outfits in progressive rock.
In 1970, they released their first album, Barclay James Harvest, which included several of the early songs and displayed the group's strengths: filled with strong harmony singing, aggressive electric guitar, and swelling Mellotron parts, it set the pattern for their subsequent releases, with Lees and Holroyd handling most of the songwriting.
Their 1979 album Eyes of the Universe was a modest hit in England, but its release marked a flashpoint in Barclay James Harvest's career in continental Europe, especially Germany; on August 30, 1980, the band performed a free concert in front of nearly 200,000 people at the Reichstag in Berlin, which was filmed and recorded.

 The Barclay James Harvest Story
It has been said, within BJH itself, amidst a present mildly rancorous milieu, that the early all-up credits were far too generous, a rather bare slap, one can't help but notice, in Wolstenholme's face and perhaps in Pritchard's as well, no longer among the living to answer the charge.
Hilarious, when you contemplate it: consumers were inexplicably fascinated when BJH had given the yo-heave to their trademark, adopting a forté oft clumsily wielded, yet abruptly became disinterested at the very moment the group had, thanks to Jackman's influence and technical wizardry, achieved their second apotheosis.
Harvest's manager, Crowther, paid Godfrey 100 pounds (Brit currency) and the details of that payment, whether or not it carried legal obligations, is not explored by either, nor are the court's contemplations of it, in the decades-later suit, revealed.

 Barclay James Harvest
Barclay James Harvest are an obscure, yet extremely tenacious, Seventies/Eighties art-rock band that has always been very nice, very friendly and very much hurt by the public feeling, churning out a commercially friendly sound that nobody wanted because it wasn't too catchy, too original, too atmospheric, too energetic, too anything.
On the Harvest label of EMI, no less; it's still not quite clear to me if the label itself was actually named after the band or if it was a coincidence, but fact is, this was the first band that the Harvest label ever picked up.
If anything, Barclay James Harvest are well aware of their obvious limitations, and never try to compensate for their weaknesses with extra bombast, which would only make a Styx out of them.

 Barclay James Harvest Discography
A pair of isolated singles in the late '60s indicated that Barclay James Harvest might be well suited to the growing progressive rock movement, based on their facility for psychedelic pop and (reason enough for induction) their use of the mellotron.
But despite more than enough talent to succeed, BJH never really carved out a niche for themselves; when it came time to describe their music, the comparison was invariably drawn to more established bands like The Moody Blues and The Beatles.
Their earliest music (up to Baby James Harvest) is a psychedelic treasure chest waiting to be rediscovered (or endless variations on "Puff The Magic Dragon," depending on your stomach for psychedelia).

Like Pink Floyd (who the band was often compared to), Barclay James Harvest was a hard rock group with classical overtones.
