Bardera (Somali Baardheere) is an important agricultural and academic [Sayed Muhammad Abdulle Hassan, "The Mad Mullah of Somaliland", is said to have studied the Arabic grammar and syntax in Bardera in the early 1870s]city in the Gedo region of Somalia.
On the eve of the European concur of the continent, the British and the Italians saw the strategic importance of Baardheere.
Bardera is the most county (beel) in Gedo; the region which Baardheere is part of.

In New York on Tuesday, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said cooperation from faction leaders was vital to deal with the emergency and to get in food, shelter and medicine.
The Red Cross delivered the first planeload of shelter material to Bardera on Tuesday.

The director of Bardera hospital Dr Qasem Aden Egal said the hospital was running out of medicines to treat the sick, who are arriving at the hospital all the time.
International aid agencies withdrew from the Gedo region, which includes Bardera, last month, after the killing of a Kenyan aid worker.
