  Bardi
Nevertheless amongst the century old legends that surround Bardi, the one about Hannibal's elephant (the last of 37) which died in solitude on the banks of the river Ceno leaving in inheritance a place name of its own, has been the hardest to give into historical truths.
It is now known that the Bardi name dates back as far as 600 A.D. when a group of Longobardi fighters, the Arimanni, camped under the cliffs of the blood colored, rocky promontory which dominates the area.
Bardi's castle is a very important building, for the position, the architecture and its history.

Bardi’s passionate interest in modern architecture, as well as his personal connections to some of the International Style’s greatest exponents, were to be of great significance for Lina Bo, who was to follow, at least initially, the same aesthetic path.
Though Bo Bardi would later challenge the opposition of nature and culture, the contrast between the abstract aesthetic of steel and glass and the lush green of the forest was an important element of her parti from the start.
Even though Bo Bardi was moving away from the sleek sophistication of her first project both formally and politically, Chateaubriand was a throwback to those authoritarian personalities familiar to the Bardis from their Italian days—men for whom the ends justify the means, and with whom they were increasingly impatient.

The Palazzo Bardi is situated on the south side of the river Arno and overlooks on one side, Via de'Bardi and on the other it enjoys a spectacular, if not unique view over the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and the cathedral.
The banks of the river were flanked by buildings belonging to patrician families, such as the Bardis, and for this reason their residences were known as palazzi.
The edifice was modified over the centuries until in the mid-nineteenth century, an architect called Enrico Poggi, was entrusted with the job of turning Florence into a capital, a role which it maintained for only five years (between 1865 and 1870), following the unification of Italy in 1860.
