Bardney is a small town 10 miles east of Lincoln, sitting on the north side of the River Witham, notable only for the huge British Sugar factory, which ceased processing on 9th February 2001.
During the Second World War, Bardney was a RAF airfield occupied by various squadrons.
1943 to 1945, 9 Squadron moved to Bardney from Waddington with Lancasters, being one of the squadrons dropping Tallboy bombs in daylight precision attacks, losing 85 Lancasters on operations.

There were three Wesleyan Methodist chapels in the parish: one at Bardney, built in 1837, to seat 450 people, one at Southrey, built in 1838, with 100 sittings, and one at Bardney Dairies, with 100 sittings.
Bardney is both a large parish and a large village about 129 miles north of London and midway between Lincoln and Horncastle.
Bardney village is at the intersection of the B1202 coming south out of Wragby and the B1190 as it runs between Horncastle and Washingborough, just southeast of Lincoln City.

Bardney, one of the intermediate stations, opened on the same date in 1848 and was originally titled "Bardney and Wragby" until it was renamed simply "Bardney" in May 1881.
A 48ft turntable was constructed at Bardney to turn the engines working the branch but, in the event, this was largely unnecessary as tank engines were used which could easily operate tender first.

Bardney airfield was situated four miles south of Wragby to the east of the B 1202 road and to the north-east of Bardney village beyond Scotgrove Wood.
Bardney opened as a satellite to Waddington in April 1943 and it received No. 9 Squadron with its Lancasters on the l3th and l4th of the month from that station, this veteran unit remaining at Bardney for the duration of hostilities.
Bardney was then on care and maintenance until later in the year when it was handed over to the Army.
