Although is is widely reported that Bardu Ali was born September 23, 1910, he was born in 1906, and in Mississppi.
Ella was a New Orleans native, and Ali was an immigrant from Arabia.

Among those who heard her were Benny Carter, Bardu Ali (conductor of the Chick Webb Orchestra that nightly lit up the dance floor at the Savoy Ballroom), and Webb band singer Charles Linton.
Though first Webb himself, then Carter and Ali were all widely credited with “discovering” young Ella, it was actually Linton who introduced Ella to Webb and insisted the bandleader give her a tryout.
At the time Webb was actively seeking a singer who he felt would increase his band’s popularity and enable it to transcend its danceband status.

She noticed by Bardu Ali of Chick Webb 's band who persuaded Webb to hire She started singing with Webb's Orchestra in 1935 in Harlem's Savoy Ballroom.
She recorded several hit songs with including "(If You Can't Sing It) You'll to Swing It" but it was her of the nursery rhyme "A Tisket A that launched her to stardom.
