In the middle ages Barfleur was one of the chief ports of embarkation for England.
About 2 M. to the north is Cape Barfleur, with a lighthouse 233 ft. high.

We are in Barfleur, a little village of granite houses on a narrow spit of land.
The castle was destroyed by the English at the beginning of the Hundred-year War, in July 1346, when King Edward, after landing in Saint-Vaast, ransacked Barfleur and Cherbourg before marching on Caen.
After the conquest of England, Barfleur became one of the main links between Normandy and England, and was the favored port of the nobility when they traveled back and forth between their domains on both sides of the English Channel.

Barfleur arriving at Cherbourg again, this time in August 1999 by which time she was painted in Brittany Ferries colours.
She's a comfortable, well equipped vessel, and I've enjoyed many crossings on her, be it for a day trip - out one night, back the next - or at the beginning or end of a holiday with the caravan or staying in a gîte.
Next are two views of the Barfleur while she was berthed at Cherbourg in August 2000, she had been moved off the linkspan and was receiving some attention.

The HMS BARFLEUR was a 2nd rate 90-gun ship-of-the-line which measured 177.5 feet long, 50.2 feet breadth and 21 feet depth.
This ship is not to be confused with the HMS BARFLEUR that was ordered and laid down in 28 October 1942, commissioned in 1944 and served with distinction in WWII, present at the formal surrender in Tokyo Bay of Japan in 1945.
HMS BARFLEUR was part of Admiral Richard Howe’s fleet at the Glorious First of June, 1794, against France’s Rear Admiral Villaret-de-Joyeuse, when the British defeated the French.
