The World of Barilla Taylor: Bringing History to Life through Primary Sources | Liza Stearns | OAH Magazine of History
From the outset, all students are told that Barilla was born into a large farming family in Roxbury, Maine on June 29, 1828, and that she left home in October, 1843 for work in Lowell’s Hamilton Mills.
While Barilla’s precise motivations for going to Lowell are not clear, the letters, receipts, poems and other belongings found in her family Bible and passed through generations of the Taylor family offer clues.
While Barilla may have been dissatisfied with mill life, it seems more likely that her solution to the dilemma was to escape, rather than reform factory life.

First, Barilla pushed for national distribution in a category of regional favorites — Ronzoni in the Northeast, Prince in Boston and Chicago, Mueller's in the Southeast, Creamette in the Midwest, American Beauty and Golden Grain on the West Coast.
Barilla's Italian and U.S. plants use the same ingredients, methods and equipment, says Luca Barilla, who, with brothers Guido and Paolo, runs the business started in Parma, Italy, by their great-grandfather in 1877.
Barilla "has done a good job — there's no question about that," but it has grown by expanding distribution and adding new cuts of pasta, rather than knocking off regional leaders on their home turf, he says.

Contrary to Barilla's assertions, the Federal Circuit did not hold that the petition information could not be corroborated with information developed in future segments of the proceeding or that the petition information may not have relevance to an uncooperative respondent in the future.
Barilla's reading of De Cecco would effectively render section 776(b)(1) a nullity because petition information would be "discredited" in its entirety simply because Commerce's LTFV investigation yielded antidumping margins calculated for some of the exporters of the subject merchandise which were different from the antidumping rates estimated in the petition.

 [Federal Register: April 15, 1998 (Volume 63, Number 72)]
Specifically, each of Barilla's independent distributors would certify that it would (1) resell all pasta purchased from Barilla in the packaging in which the pasta was delivered to it, and (2) would not repack any pasta in packages greater than five pounds (hereafter referred to as bulk pasta) into packages of five pounds or less.
Barilla's refusal to respond to our questionnaire impedes our ability not only to determine if circumvention of the antidumping duty order is occurring, but also to distinguish between its bulk imports for repackaging and any bulk imports which may have been exempt from the scope of the antidumping duty order.
According to Barilla, this scheme would enable the Department to exclude bulk pasta that was not destined for repackaging after importation, e.g., bulk pasta shipped directly to institutional or food service users, from the scope of the antidumping duty order.

Barilla revolutionized the Italian pasta industry's marketing practices by creating a strong brand name and image for its pasta, selling pasta in a sealed -cardboard box with a recognizable color pattern, rather than in bulk, and investing in large-scale advertising programs.
About half of Barilla’s pasta was sold in northern Italy and half in the south, where Barilla held a smaller share of the market than in the north but where the market was larger.
