		Formerly a district called Bakhraganj, it is now a division.
		The Barisal town was under the control of the Roychoudhury family, which now has moved to Calcutta.
		Incorporated as a municipality in 1876 and upgraded to city corporation in 2002, it is a trans-shipment center for rice, hides, and pulses.

	NFB - 50 lakh exposed to arsenic contamination in 11 dists - 04 Jun 2001
		BARISAL, June 3: About 50 lakh people are exposed to arsenic contamination in 11 districts of the southern region of the country.
		Of the total 17 died at village Shapania in Barisal Sadar upazila, one died at Agarpur village in Babuganj upazila and one died at village Rajihar in Agoiljhara upazila of Barisal district.
		Mohammad Abdul Bari, officer of arsenic sector of Barisal PHED, told this correspondent that his department examined waters of 5,582 deep tubewells and 21,126 shallow tubewells in Gournadi, Uzirpur, Banaripara, Agoiljhara, Bhandaria and Jhalakathi Sadar upazilas recently.
