BarisanMountains (Indonesian Pegunungan Barisan), volcanic mountain chain extending for about 1705 km (about 1060 mi) along the length of the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia.
The Barisan lie near the western edge of the island and form one of Sumatra's three parallel land regions.
In February 1994 an earthquake measuring between 6.4 and 7.2 on the Richter scale shook the southern part of the Barisan.
Barisan Selatan National Park comprises of 365,000 hectares of forest in the Bukit BarisanMountains.
Sumatran tigers, the Malayan tapir, elephant, Sumatran serow, siamang, agile gibbons, clouded leopards, wild dogs, reticulated pythons, water monitors, squirrels the size of large cats, a rare viable population of Sumatran rhinoceros; these are just a handful of the animals found here.
Fortunately their distance from one another is not so great that the groups cannot interact, and the habitat between them is quite suitable for tigers.

The volcanically active central Bukit Barisan, of which the reserve complex comprises a part, is characterised by a flat enclosed rift valley of approximately 140,000ha surrounded on all sides by some of the highest peaks in Sumatra.
The topography of the region is generally steep and incised, with prominent spurs descending toward the east and west from the north-south aligned ridges of the Barisanmountains.
Mountainous regions are characterised by highly variable weather patterns, with the highest elevations being under cloud for much of the time (De Wulf et al., 1981).

Development of the BarisanMountains, and possible volcanic islands to the south and southeast, further decreased and then cut off and overwhelmed marine influences and added new clastic and volcaniclastic sources from those directions (de Coster, 1974; Cole and Crittenden, 1997; Hamilton, 1979).
The interior of the island is dominated by two geographical regions: the BarisanMountains in the west and swampy plains in the east.
The backbone of the island is the Barisanmountains chain.
To the east, big rivers carry silt from the mountain, forming the vast lowland interspersed by swamps.

They live mostly along the Lintang River and in the valleys of the Bukit Barisanmountains in the southern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Their region also has many coffee plantations (the coffee is sold for export), as well as rubber trees and fields with vegetables and spices, which grow particularly well in the mountains.
The fields and plantations are in valleys and on mountain slopes, far away from the villages.
Consist of the southern end of the Bukit BarisanMountains, it is along narrow reserve convering all forest types rising from the sea at Belimbing to the peak of Gunung Pulung (1,964 m asl).
The reserve is rather underrated and would certainly reveal many of the mountain birds if properly surveyed.
The current list of 121 species is probably less than half complete and birdwatchers should be encouraged to fill out the rest of the list, which could prove very interesting.
Together the parksBukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Kerinci Seblat and Gunung Leuserrepresent the most important blocks of lowland forests on the island.
The Bukit Barisan Selatan ecosystem, including the national park and surrounding forest area, was no exception: More than 20 percent of the forest within the 365,000-hectare park was cleared for illegal agriculture.
Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is one of four geographic focal areas for CEPF investment in Sumatra.

The Dutch and the Javanese settled the coastal volcanic plains, while much of the interior of the island was left to the jungle and a few tribal groups.
