Barisan Sosialis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Certainly a formidable rival, the Barisan Sosialis was accused by the PAP for being used as a front for Communism, a charge which members of the party vehemently denied.
Though the Barisan Sosialis' official position was to 'take the fight to the streets', in reality, the party believed that Singapore's future was in serious doubt and felt pointless to continue the political struggle.
In 1988, the Barisan Sosialis was dissolved and its members, led by Dr Lee Siew Choh, joined the Workers' Party of Singapore.

Chia Thye Poh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chia was a former member of the now defunct political party Barisan Sosialis and a former Member of Parliament of Jurong Constituency.
This was part of the Barisan's strategy to protest "undemocratic acts" of the Government, by carrying their struggle against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) outside of Parliament.
The official statement released by the Government stated that Barisan's attempt to rouse a mass struggle outside of parliament was prejudicial against the stability of Singapore.

Singapore general election, 1963 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the PAP expelled the pro-communist faction from within its ranks in 1961, this meant that 13 seat-holders had left the PAP and formed the Barisan Sosialis, reducing the number of seats the PAP held to 26 - holding a majority by just one seat.
However, the Barisan Sosialis had already suffered a major blow as seven months before many of its members, including the secretary general Lim Chin Siong had been arrested and held without trial under Operation Coldstore.
They failed to win most of the seats however, and this was also hampered by a lack of concentration of their supporters in the constituencies - this was reflected by the fact that they had won 193,301 votes, or 33.2% of the votes by popular vote in comparison to winning roughly 25.4% of the seats.

Managed crisis — National threat and legitimacy
The Barisan Sosialis was out-maneuvered when a number of its high-ranking politicians were arrested in 1963 and the party, which had large support from the majority Chinese, lost to the PAP in an election the same year.
Furthermore, the threat of Communism was used not only against the Barisan Sosialis but also to maintain a strict national security law, which enabled the government to arrest anyone without a trial.
Even though the government has constantly raised awareness to all kinds of threats, the economic threat was the greatest motivating factor and when Singapore’s standard of living had reached an advanced level and most Singaporeans could be counted as middle class, the ability of the government to use the threat to legitimize its actions dwindled.

In the general elections of 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980, the PAP won all of the seats in an expanding parliament.
1963: won 37 of 51 seats, with 47% of the vote (opposition votes were spilt between the Barisan Sosialis Party and the United People's Party).

Seventeen other opposition parties were registered in 1989, including the Barisan Sosialis, once the primary target of the government's political surveillance activities because of its former role in antigovernment street demonstrations, student protests, and industrial strikes.

This was because the Federation of Malaya (under Tunku Abdul Rahman) was fiercely anti-communist, and as part of condition for Singapore to join the Federation, the PAP has to round up the key members of Barisan Sosialis and the left-wing trade unionists...the so-called Operation Cold Store.
If we read the UK docs between the lines, it would appear that the Brits had by then almost made up their minds to support LKY, who appeared to be able to sway the Chinese-educated masses and influence if not rein it completely the communist elements within PAP.
By the way, the Barisan Socialis was formed only in the early 1960s, 63 if i remember correctly.

When the previous WP Sec-Gen J P Jeyaratnam was a Member of Parliament, he provided some electrifying moments in Parliament, confronting LKY - who was always livid and impatient with the subjects brought up by Jeya.
From some of the news articles of the 1950s and 1960s, reported in the press, this was the similar situation of Parliamentary proceedings of those days, when the Ruling Party had to respond to the serious challenges from the Opposition led by ex-PAP members in the Barisan Sosialis Party, as well as the Workers Party.
Parliamentary sessions were always alive and not merely entertaining (as always used as an excuse for NOT having an Opposition in Parliament), but for the fact that cutting issues are always brought up that expose the weaknesses and failings of the Ruling Party.
