Barite commonly occurs in lead-zinc veins in limestones, in hot spring deposits, and with hematite ore. It is often associated with the minerals anglesite and celestite.
Barite that is used as an aggregate in a "heavy" cement is crushed and screened to a uniform size.
Although barite contains a "heavy" metal (barium), it is not considered to be a toxic chemical by most governments because of its extreme insolubility.

Barite deposits in Arkansas are present in the Ouachita Mountain province, specifically in Hot Spring, Montgomery, and Polk Counties, and near Dierks in Howard County in the West Gulf Coastal Plain.
Barite was first discovered in 1888 in Arkansas in Montgomery County and in 1900 was recognized near Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County.
The barite is typically a grayish to white, granular to finely crystalline rock, and is easily identified by its relative softness, high density for a nonmetallic mineral, and by a sulfurous odor when hit by a hammer or scratched with a knife blade.

Barite's specific gravity is only 13% lower than the mineral magnetite, which is the magnetic constituent of the placer miners familiar "fl sand." Fragments of barite in a stream, wash or crushed outcrop will concentrate with the fl sand in a pan.

Measurements of the mercury released from barite under simulated digestive tract conditions indicate that mercury in barite is not extracted under conditions in animal digestive tracts.
