Baritone saxophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The baritone saxophone is one of the larger and lower pitched members of the saxophone family.
The baritone saxophone (often called "bari sax," to avoid confusion with the baritone horn, which is often referred to simply as "baritone") is the largest saxophone commonly seen in modern ensembles.
Baritone saxophone players in marching groups often use a special harness that distributes the weight of the instrument onto the player's back instead of around his neck, as is the conventional way of supporting the instrument.

Saxophones   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
A saxophone is a single-reed woodwind, closely related to the clarinet.
Saxophones are usually made of brass (occasionally silver alloy or plastic), but they are still classified as woodwinds, not brass, because the sound is produced by a reed (not a cup mouthpiece) and the instrument is shaped and played like a woodwind, not a brass instrument.
A non-transposing "C melody" or "C tenor" saxophone was popular in the early twentieth century in the U.S., particularly as a parlor-music instrument, since the player could read from the same sheet music as an accompanying pianist and be in the correct key.

 HyperMusic -- Musical Instruments: Saxophone
Even though the body of the saxophone is usually made of brass, the sax is a woodwind because it is blown the same as a clarinet.
The saxophone was invented to be a bridge between the woodwind and brass sections, and to boost the sound of the woodwind section in military bands.
However, the saxophone is classified as a member of the woodwind family because of its flute-like key system and the use of a reed.
