Barkat, who has served as prime minister since 1978, was met at Djibouti airport by cabinet members and MPs.
He was later greeted by members of his Afar community at his residence, where a procession of camel riders and a honking motorcade staged a colourful ceremony to celebrate his return.
Barkat is the most senior representative of the minority Afar community.
