Barkerville is now a provincial historic park and never was what one could accurately call a ghost town since it had been continuously populated since its founding in the 1860s.
Barkerville is one of the best historic mining area museums anywhere.
This time we camped at Lowhee campground which is located between Barkerville and Wells.

The Chinese who came to Barkerville in the 1860s, like the occidentals, came dreaming of gold, hoping, not only to gain individual wealth, but trying also to increase their family's wealth and good fortune.
Since the Chinese miners came to Barkerville to increase their families good fortune, they would not have jeopardized this by failing to carefully consider where to bury friends and kin unfortunate enough to die before returning home.
Barkerville mountain assumes on the role of the Green Dragon running out to the left, while Conklin Mountain the lowest of the three mountains becomes the White Tiger mountain forming the classic armchair configuration needed for a good feng-shui site.

Barkerville is, as the name says on the sign, a historic town that was famous for the gold rush days back in the late 1800's.
Barkerville consisted of three main streets, each carrying horse and carriage as the main mode of transportation.
Then we left Barkerville, happy as ever, and drove back to Prince George in the rental car, to go to bed early because the next day we were scheduled to hit the train very early in the morning!!

Most of Barkerville's visitors have gone home, but a few linger to enjoy a meal at the Lung Duck Tong Restaurant in the Chinatown area before retiring to spend the night in one of the heritage buildings which now serve as Bed and Breakfast Inns.
In the early hours of September 16th 1868 an amorous miner while trying to steal a kiss from one of the girls in Barry and Adler's Saloon knocked over a stove pipe and started a conflagration that reduced the town to cinders in a matter of an hour and a half.
The other site in Barkerville which preceded the fire by several years, and profoundly affected not only the Cariboo, but the entire province of British Columbia is located a five minute walk away from Jake's Coffee House, along the main street.

I regret to have to report that about 2:30 today a fire broke out in Barkerville and by 5:00 nine tenths of the Town were destroyed.
Scotts Saloon was saved in the march of the Fire but it is stripped to a shell.
HBC store everything lost, a few houses in Chinatown and at the other end of Barkerville were saved.
