It was a very busy station with all the Fenchurch Street passenger trains, the London Midland DMU service from Kentish Town and a lot of freight from Ripple Yard and beyond.
Riding out from Fenchurch Street station we passed the depot at East Ham on the way.

Barking is one of the lines regular reversing points, and also sees several Hammersmith and City Line C Stock trains stabled there each night.
The station starter for the bay road; care has to be taken to ensure that the correct signal is being observed; note the signal in advance of it - that's one of C2C's signals and (particularly when in the train's cab) can draw a driver's attention away from 'our' signal.
This is taken at the opposite end of the sidings, that is towards Barking and gives a general view across the whole area.

The London Underground District Line also serves Upminster, Barking, West Ham and Tower Hill (for Fenchurch Street) and tickets are interchangeable between the two operators.
The service then splits at either Barking or Upminster with two trains an hour for Grays via Rainham, two for Southend Central via Ockendon and four services to Shoeburyness via Basildon (two of which run semi-fast and do not stop at Limehouse, West Horndon, Laindon or Pitsea).
All stations on the route are managed by c2c with the exception of Fenchurch Street which is managed by Network Rail and West Ham which is managed by London Underground.

At Barking trains may terminate in the bay, or may run into the sidings to the east of the station.
Initially the line ran into the two westernmost platforms of the GER mainline station (then numbered 12 and 11, but now 1 and 2), but it was diverted on to its present route as part of the continuing drive to complete the Inner Circle (see the Circle Line page).
The lines were extended westwards by the LSWR on 1848-08-22, and the station was replaced by a new one on the through lines (at the present location) during 1849-09.
