  Eugene Hoy Barksdale, First Lieutenant, United States Army Air Service
Barksdale was born November 5, 1897, in Goshen Springs, Mississippi.
At the time of Barksdale's death in 1926, he was acting chief of the test pilot section in the absence of the chief "Jimmy" Doolittle.
Barksdale AFB is named in honor of Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale, Air Corps,U.S. Army, who lost his life August 11, 1926, while flight testing an observation type airplane over McCook Field, in Dayton, Ohio.

It was a sprawling section of cotton plantation near Bossier City, La. Barksdale Field was established in November 1930 with various pursuit units assigned until World War II, when the base conducted training of replacement aircrew of entire groups destined for overseas service.
Barksdale Field was renamed Barksdale Air Force Base in 1948.
The 47th BW was stationed at Barksdale briefly from November 1948, with the base becoming a SAC installation in November 1949.

I was stationed at Barksdale AFB 1995-1998 abd watched as the museum got larger.the staff is great but ubfortunatly understaffed.All those aorcraft are maontained by 1 person,with occasional volunteer help.Overall it is a fun day and very informative.
She was stationed at Grand Forks AFB (I was also!)At the time I left, she had had the most on-time take-off's for the bombers on the base.
I was stationed at Barksdale in the 1960\'s and would like to see the base again and tour the museum if it were open.

The 2nd was established as a bombardment wing, very heavy, on 15 October 15, 1947, and activated at Davis-Monthan Field (later Davis-Monthan AFB), Arizona on November 5th, where it flew B-29s.
On January 1, 1949, it moved to Chatham AFB, Georgia, but stayed only until April 1st when it moved to nearby Hunter AFB, where drew on the manpower of other organizations.
It was a big day as the wing was also relocated to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
