In 1891 the year William was born the family were living in Barkston Ash and had a couple of servents Charles was obviousely very well off.
Johns parents lived in Barkston Ash at the time of his death hence the reason he is shown on the WW1 memorial there, however because he was born in Ulleskelf i have placed his details on the Kirkby Wharfe/ Ulleskelf page.

The Ash tree Inn is located close to the battlefield that witnessed Englands bloodiest battle, the battle of Towton.  Inside the pub you will find antiques and replica artefacts from the battlefield.
Although the present building was much modified and extended in the 18th Century the site goes back much further and a 'hosteler' of Barkston Ash, one Agnes de Bradeley, is noted in the poll records of 1370.
A malt house used to sit directly opposite on the main road along with a pump and water trough, and the present day car park was the site of a large stables and/or barn.
