Barliman Butterbur is a fictional character from J.
Butterbur was the owner of the Inn of the Prancing Pony in Bree.
Butterbur appears in both Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (1978) and Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), but in both adaptations most of his scenes, including the references to Gandalf's letter, are cut.

Barliman was a Man, but as Bree was inhabited by both Men and Hobbits, he had two hobbit employees: Bob, who worked in the stables, and Nob, a servant.

This is the inn/pub in the town of Bree owned by Barliman Butterbur and visited by the hobbits during their journey from the Shire to Rivendell, the place where they first met a mysterious Ranger named Strider -- Aragorn in disguise.
One notable thing about Butterbur's inn is the lack of female servants -- perhaps simply a matter of none being mentioned, since we saw very few of the people who might have worked there.
But since it was common for men to act as servers in inns and pubs, I decided to let The Pony have male "barmaids" to contrast with the women of the more expensive pub.

While browsing the official site I found who was cast as Barliman Butterbur, the owner of the Prancing Pony Inn.
Rumours and speculation of gone around that Peter Jackson himself would reserve this role for his own cameo, but this, apparently is not true.
