Barmah State Forest (29 500 ha) is situated upon the floodplains of the Murray River.
It soon passes another side road on the left which leads to the Barmah Lake Camping Area before arriving at the Dharnya Aboriginal Centre where there are displays relating to the history and culture of the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal community, the forest and their association with it.
Barmah Island is the section of land to the north-west of Barmah which is sandwiched between the Murray River on the western side and Barmah Creek on the eastern side.

The Lake Victoria storage was constructed in the late 1920’s by the River Murray Commission to provide a reliable water supply for the development of the Lower Murray region in South Australia and to mitigate and augment flood peaks.
This is a narrow section of the River Murray near Barmah, Victoria, that makes it impossible to move large volumes of water downstream from the main MDBC storages of Hume and Dartmouth without causing environmental degradation due to the unseasonal flooding of the River Red Gum forests.
During smaller floods, Lake Victoria may be operated to enhance flood levels to increase the area of the floodplain that is inundated or the duration of flooding to ensure the breeding cycle of water birds is completed.

Barmah Forest virus (BFV) was first isolated in 1974 from Culex annulirostris mosquitoes collected in the Barmah Forest near the Murray River in northern Victoria, and simultaneously from mosquitoes collected in southwest Queensland.
Culex annulirostris is the major vector in inland areas and Ochlerotatus vigilax (New South Wales) and Ochlerotatus camptorhynchus in southern parts of Victoria and Tasmania are the vectors in coastal regions.

Cattle from the Barmah run are mustered into a holding paddock at Goose Swamp and then moved to a muster yard where selected beasts are drafted and removed from the forest.
This race is run by the Barmah Forest Cattlemen's Association and is only for the Musterers who ride during the week of the muster.
The Barmah Forest Cattlemens Association, members manage the cattle in the forest and oversee the mustering, in association with DSE and Parks Victoria.

Went up to Barmah over the weekend to get away from the world for a while and have a fish.
