Topic: Barna

In the News (Fri 27 Nov 09)

  Students and friends,
Barna now calls these Christians who no longer center their lives around Church “Revolutionaries” and believes they (his count of 20 million of them and growing) are the real future of the manifested body of Christ on earth.
Barna; this book should have been co-written with a team of scholars who would join together with to utilize Barna’s sociological strength of reporting trends of culture and opinions of society; not interpreting scriptures and evaluating the church’s ability to meet his self-selected criterion for success.
Ironically, Barna’s stated doctrine of the Church is a product of the evangelical churches he critiques, both of which misunderstand the fundamental nature of the Church, distort the doctrine of grace and the means of grace, and ultimately succumb to Pelegian pragmaticism.

Barna's book, in my opinion, is an attempt to explain these numbers, the cultural trends that are influencing this trend, the possibility of having a spiritual life without the congregation, and the kind of people who will lead this radical upheaval.

Emerging Church : Christianity & Postmodern Culture : Assessing Barna's Revolution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A "revolutionary" who is, in Barna's view, typical of the new wave of Christians in America- living independently of the local church, with a "24/7 faith unfettered by the clutter and bureaucracy within the church walls".
It's almost as if Barna is saying, "Look, I've been at this thing for a very long time now and I'm asking you to trust me when I say that all the statistical evidence suggests that the local church is a dying entity that is quickly proving irrelevant".
It is precisely because Barna has been so identified with the Church growth movement that focused over the last two decades on catering to the "felt needs" of individuals, that people are more than a little surprised to find Barna now claiming that the local church is growing passé in the new millennium of faith.

But the Barna poll discloses that only 9 percent of the Catholics in the United States agree with this theological concept that Martin Luther had culled from chapter 3 of the apostle Paul's epistle to the Romans.
George Barna, president of the research firm that conducted the research, noted, "It is important to remember that we are not reporting the official teachings of these churches.

Barna should be applauded for the amount of sociological research that is found in this book that shows what many have long suspected, the Church is in almost indistinguishable from the world, and is in a state of bankrupcy.
To Barna, the only difference between a leader in the world, and leader in the Church is that a leader in the Church has Christian character and possesses a vision from God, whereas the business leader does not.
Barna claims that what the Church needs is better business practices, a closer hewing to successful management techniques when dealing with personnel, and plenty of other misguided answers that have their basis not in the Bible, but in Total Quality Management.

Barna is keenly aware that critics (such as myself) will dismiss these Revolutionaries “because such individuals and their faith practices are allegedly not in full compliance with Scripture” (19).
Barna, however, believes they are perfectly within their biblical rights to pursue this “revolutionary” spirituality sans the local church.
Barna would have us believe that these passions are what constitute true, genuine spirituality and that they can (and in some cases should) be attained irrespective of one’s involvement in a local church.

Barna discusses how the influence of the church has diminished in the US —others call this trend the end of Christendom—and it seems at times that Barna wants to work so that the Church is back at the center of society.
Barna argues that current systems of churches are not producing Revolutionaries, but that there are growing models that are changing the landscape: house churches and cyberchurches.
(Barna’s evaluation of new models of churches is reminiscent of Pete Ward’s, Liquid Church.) Barna argues that the local congregation (church with a lower case “c”) is not a focus of biblical texts.

 A Revolution in the Making?
What George Barna misses is the big picture of New Testament ecclesiology--a picture that identifies congregational life as the very means whereby believers are shaped into Christlikeness and Christian maturity through the ministry of the Word, the fellowship of the saints, and the normative patterns of church life.
Barna's Revolutionaries may be involved on spiritual quests that have added dimensions of meaning to their lives, but what they lack is the accountability, deployment, mutuality, and koinonia of the local church as envisioned in the New Testament.
Barna offers genuine insight when he points to the larger cultural trends of generational transition, the rise of a new view of life, dissatisfaction with irrelevant structures, the impact of technology, the importance of genuine personal relationships, direct participation in reality, and the quest for deeper meaning.

 George Barna Interview
BARNA: The whole research we did on turnaround churches had to do with congregations that had been strong at one point and then pretty much fell apart and then had a particular catalytic activity or series of events take place that enabled that congregation to be strong again.
One of the necessary components is that those churches brought in a new individual to be their primary leader, and that individual is not just a preacher-teacher — not that that's bad, we need those — but that the individual who came in to spearhead that ministry was first and foremost a leader.
BARNA: [Calmly, not responding to this outburst] What impresses me is when I find people in a church who are living their lives around the notion that we exist for one reason and that is to know, love and serve God with all our heart, mind, strength and soul.

The issue of the individual person, his or her lifestyle choices and their personal decision-making skills was key to identifying potential solutions, despite the problems.

Those who have followed Barna’s work have valued it to the extent that changes in worship styles, church practices and methods of discipleship and evangelism can be more or less directly linked to guidance derived from Barna’s polls and trend reports.
But Barna goes much further, concluding that the local church concept is approaching obsolescence due to its accumulated errors and that an “under the radar but seminal renaissance” is in the making among Christians who have given up on the local church.
Barna’s gloomy prediction for the local church is founded on his conclusion that America has a “stagnant spiritual landscape.” Barna does not, apparently, see that churches are on every corner and new construction is proliferating.
