 A Convent Tale by P. Renée Baernstein - R A I N T A X I o n l i n e
In 1533, in the spirit of the Catholic Reformation, Countess Ludovica Torelli bought a house near Milan for a group of Barnabite monks and female devotees bent on improving morals by doing penance in public.
The Barnabites and Angelics, as the nuns were called, even adopted a spiritual leader or "living saint," Paola Antonia Negri, whose raptures confirmed the divine inspiration of her teachings and of her appointments to monastic offices.
The Inquisitors sent the living saint Paola Antonia Negri to prison and enclosed the nuns within the convent walls, no longer to be "missionaries, governors of charitable institutions, and penitential examples of religious zeal to the city." Founder Countess Torelli left in disgust, later to start a secular girls' college--but she was the only one.

A Convent Tale: A Century of Sisterhood in Spanish Milan Journal of Social History - Find Articles
Founded by the young, wealthy widow Ludovica Torelli in 1535, the convent of San Paolo issued from the yeasty religious experimentation of the early sixteenth century.
Twice-widowed by age twenty-eight, Torelli fashioned a social alternative to family by endowing a religious community comprised of three branches: the Angelic nuns of San Paolo, an order of male priests later known as the Barnabites, and a short-lived confraternity for married couples.
After 1552, "the Angelics ceased to be missionaries, governors of charitable institutions, and penitential examples of religious zeal." (72) Baernstein handles the intricate source material here with both rigor and flair, although the nuns' secular supporters remain curiously silent within her narration.
