Barnaby was the only TV detective to kill a man during that period (albeit by mistake, when he fired a warning shot into a parking-garage ceiling and the ricochet killed a passer-by who was actually a scout for the bad guys).

Midsomer Murders - Set Four John Nettles A well done mystery series of exceptional complexity
John Nettles plays Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby with a droll sense of humor that is most appealing and most of his ongoing problems in the early episodes stem from his job's keeping him away from his lovely wife (Jane Wymark) and daughter (Laura Howard).
Dectective Barnaby (John Nettles) and Sgt. Troy (Daniel Casey) are likeable policemen who always have something going on in their personal lives that makes its way into the tale, whether it be Barnaby's wife's latest recipe or Troy's latest love interest.
Inspired by the novels of Caroline Graham, modern master of the English village mystery, the series stars John Nettles (Bergerac) as the unflappable Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby with Daniel Casey (The Wingless Bird) as his eager young assistant.

Saga Magazine - Writers in waiting
Caroline Graham, creator of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, the star of television’s Midsomer Murders, grew up longing to be a writer but she was 40 before she attempted to fulfil her dream.
But A Ghost in the Machine, her most recent book and the first in five years, won’t do for television as it doesn’t fit the formula for the series, not least because Barnaby and his sidekick Sergeant Troy don’t appear until halfway through the book.
Caroline’s manner is generally more serene than one might expect from a person whose success lies in writing murder mysteries, a mark perhaps of the fact that she is a Buddhist, meditating for an hour every day.

Despite the demand for his skills in the motion picture field, television was not immediately left behind: themes for series (The Waltons, Barnaby Jones) and scores for a number of made-for-television movies were still undertaken during the early half of the decade.
