Barnegat Bay is a small brackish arm of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 30 mi (50 km) long along the coast of Ocean County, New Jersey in the United States.
The bay is fed by several small rivers, including the Toms River and Metedeconk River, which empty into the bay through small estuaries along its inner shore.
The bay is part of the Intercoastal Waterway, entered on its north end by the Point Pleasant Canal and connecting on the south end with Little Egg Harbor via the small Manahawkin Bay.

The forthcoming "Spring Barnegat Bay Festival", scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, is a major public outreach program sponsored by the Barnegat Bay Estuary Program through the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, the Department of Environmental Protection, Cook College of Continuing education, and several conservation organizations.
The purpose of this first Barnegat Bay Festival is in the spirit of "Giving Back to The Bay" through a public outreach program to expose the public to the watershed concept and the importance of protecting Barnegat Bay.
Barnegat Bay does not exist as a single ecosystem, but is the terminus of the several watersheds which directly affect the health and welfare of the Bay.

The submerged aquatic, eelgrass which is recognized as the barometer of the health of Barnegat Bay has fallen to the low end of the scale in 2001.
The eelgrass meadows in most of Barnegat Bay suffered from an early growth of a large macro algae which covered the growing grass starving it from sunlight.
A recent survey of the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds (eelgrass and widgeon grass) in Barnegat Bay showed that the heavy brown algae covering the grass in May and June had died and the eelgrass was growing well.
