The human flea lacks the genal and pronotal combs characteristic of the cat flea and dog flea, and may be distinguished from the oriental rat flea by having its ocular bristle inserted beneath the eye instead of in front of it, as it is in the latter species (figure 302).
It is a tiny, burrowing flea, found in the tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America, the West Indies, and Africa.
It is reddish brown, and about 1 mm long, although the gravid female may become as large as a "small pea." The fertilized female slashes the skin with her mouthparts, then inserts her head and body until only the last 2 abdominal segments are exposed.

Judge Barnes was re-appointed by President Hayes in 1878 and retired to his home in Delevan in 1881; he died nine years later.
Lucien A. Barnes was born to Clarissa and A. Barnes on April 17, 1840 in Martinsburg, N.Y. After having lived in Delevan for twelve years, Lucien came to Dakota Territory with his wife Mary Means, whom he had wed in 1864.

The indications are that ground nests are preponderant in the southwestern third of the state and in the Sheyenne Grasslands of southeastern North Dakota, while tree nests are more numerous in the remaining portions.
In 1874 during the expedition from Fort Lincoln southwest toward the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mourning Doves were abundant on the plains, and the "nest was always on the ground" (Grinnell 1875).
In Stutsman County in 1950, most shelterbelt nesting sites were in Chinese elm, American elm, and Russian olive; and the height above the ground for 43 of these nests ranged from 1 1/2 to 12 feet and averaged 5 feet (Boldt and Hendrickson 1952).

city, seat (1879) of Barnes county, southeastern North Dakota, U.S. It lies in the Sheyenne River valley, about 60 miles (100 km) west of Fargo.
It was part of the ancient city of Thebes and was the burial site of almost all the kings (pharaohs) of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties (1539–1075 BC), from Thutmose I to Ramses X. Located in the hills behind Dayr al-Bahri, the 62 known tombs exhibit variety both in plan and in decoration.
The city is located on the Missouri River near the geographic center of the state and is dominated by the great gray dome of the Capitol, rising from a riverside bluff.
