Barnes was employed by the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation company as foreman of extra and section gangs, and has been working out of Lewiston, Idaho, for the past three or four months, while his wife has been at Cascade Locks with her parents.
Barnes sat down to breakfast and was called into a sleeping room where the husband was sitting.
Barnes was arrested by Cascade Locks officers in 1926 on a liquor charge, and at that time they took away from him the pistol with which the double tragedy was committed.

NW Barnes Road was widened from a 2 lane roadway to 5 lanes, including 4 travel lanes, a center turn lane with curbs, gutter, sidewalks, bike lanes, illumination, and landscaping.
For Barnes Road, the PAC selected an alignment that shifts slightly to the north of the existing road, to minimize impacts to existing apartments.
On both Cornell and Barnes Road, the number of driveways was reduced and driveways were relocated to improve safety for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists, to reduce congestion, and to improve aesthetics.
