In 1927, Bigard toured with Oliver, but quit shortly afterwards and played for a little with the Charles Elgar's Creole Orchestra and Luis Russell Orchestra.
Bigard found his niche with Duke Ellington's Orchestra, where he almost exclusively played clarinet.
Bigard was semi-retired after 1962, but still played now and then, recording with Earl Hines, and playing in a Johnny St. Cyr's Dixieland band called the Young Men from New Orleans at Disneyland in Los Angeles.

Bigard's initial reputation was made as a tenor saxophonist; in fact, based on a few of his recordings (particularly those with Luis Russell), Bigard was number two behind Coleman Hawkins in the mid-'20s.
However, Barney Bigard, whose swing style was sometimes out-of-place with Armstrong, really sounded at his best during his Duke Ellington years.

Bigard's was one of the most distinctive jazz voices, his playing characterized by a rich, flowing sound and his habitual use of the lower, chalumeau, register of the clarinet.
Although this was Ellington's common practice, in later years Bigard would occasionally disconcert interviewers by ferociously declaring, ‘I wrote that!’ whenever almost any Ellington composition was mentioned.
Although Bigard was a pleasure to hear in later years, there was a great deal of repetition in his work.
