Barnsley was the coal capital of Yorkshire, situated as it was among what were claimed to be the richest coalfields in the country, and over a quarter of the town’s male workforce in 1901 were miners.
In Barnsley in the same month locally important circumstances persuaded the trades council, which was to support the ILP in the by-election of 1897, to assist a Conservative flsmith in depriving the miners’ leader William Parrott of his seat on the town council.
Barnsley by-election was occasioned by the death on 11 September 1897 of the fourth Marquess of Northampton.

In total the BNP stood in almost 120 constituencies and gained 191,573, considerably up on their performances of 2001, and showing that they were capable of building on their successes achieved during last years local and European elections.
The winner-take-all thing (which doesn't apply to European parliamentary elections; we nearly won 2-3 seats in the European Parliament within the last year) is a huge obstacle, of course.
The UK system is very similar to the US system in that it lends itself to two party (which eventually becomes one party) politics.

I admit that I was disappointed with the results that only saw a marginal increase in support for the BNP.
I'm not sure how the situation can get much worse in the UK with cities like Leicester, Bradford and London ready to fall to the coloured hordes.
Watching UK nationalist politics is an extremely frustrating observer sport :(The Welsh and Scottish nationalist parties are dumber than a retarded ant, the less said about Northern Ireland politics the better, and in England well...

In the Prime Minister's Sedgefield constituency, MRLP standardbearer Boney Maroney Staniforth pulled 137 votes.
Also, the Eurosceptic U.K. Independence Party seems to be doing quite well, despite Europe being well in the background of this year's campaign, and the Tories taking a hard line on immigration.
Now that more of the results are in it appears that the Labour party is going to hold an 80 seat majority over the Tories and LibDems, not as bad as first thought.
